How can RICE be bad? It's the best after a hard ride... Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

White rice has a high glycemic index. Brown rice would be better.
Rice is also naturally high in phytates which inhibit iron absorbtion; too much can make you anaemic.

rice? bad? wtf??
how is a food, eaten by more than half the worlds population as a staple, bad for you?
rice is a great long lasting energy food... the lowest GI rice is basmati (yum yum!) and its probably the most economical too (1 cup makes 3 cups...)
i wouldnt think it advisable to eat a whole lot of rice before a big ride (then again, its not advisable to eat a whole lot of anything before a big ride) but i just cant see how rice could be bad for you.

if it is, im in trouble, i luuurve the stuff. (basmati rice, with natural set yoghurt, garlic flakes, black pepper and kalamata olives... yum!)

keep eating your sushi, i think your brother needs to learn some more about good carbs.

Rice is okay for those who are burning a lot of calories and those who have a metabolism of a humming bird.

I used to eat both white and brown rice in my younger days (current BMR is too slow for rice) even as I was preparing for bodybuilding competitions. I went down below 5% bodyfat multitudes of times while having rice in my daily diet.

I eat brown rice pretty much on a daily basis. Its great fuel for my body. To me its a great food. It goes so well with all the chicken I eat.

I had rice in my program all the time (on or off) back in that day because I had so much trouble putting on weight.

How's that for honesty. I'm no Landis or Lance

Hey guys, what's the caloric difference b/n white and brown rice? Next to nothing. Brown rice is just unmilled or partly milled white rice ie. White rice with a shell that has some other nutrition in it. From a caloric point of view, there's nothing b/n them.

Yep, I eat rice.

bear in mind though although the refining process deos nothing to affect the calorific content of grains (only the husk and germ are removed leacving the carb rich endosperm intact), it does cause a loss of a high percentage of the mineral and vitamin content of the grain. all very well having carbs for energy but if you haven't got the b-vitamins and magnesium to release the energy then its far less useful.

Dudes,

White or brown rice is fine. I dropped about 40 lbs this year and ate rice all the time.. 2 to 3 times a day. Rice gives you what you need for working out plus allowed me to work out 1x in the AM and 1x in the PM. it is really a question of making sure you eat enough to sustain what you're doing and do not over eat.

White rice is more simple carbs so you tend to lose energy faster (like eating a candy bar)... brown rice is more complex carbs and will stick w/ you longer (though not stick ON you). eating white rice is just like eating any simple carbohydrate item... quick energy and the starch turns to sugar....

I found rice is good for faster source of energy than wheat. (bread, pasta etc.. I found is good for carb loading) I have grown up being a rice eater and can say that it is not the rice that makes you fat. I think it comes down to what you eat with the rice or how it is prepared, if you start loading gravy from curries, fried take away dishes on top it's going to be many times heavier in calories than your sushi rolls. Fried rice is pretty greasy and heavy too.
Steamed rice and Sushi rolls are pretty lean, even the ones with tempura inside can't be that bad unless you're an inactive object.
