I went out for a ride with my buddy yesterday, low 40's F, lt. rain and in the hurry to get going I didn't grab a water bottle.
Of course I was getting thirsty so my friend gave me his second bottle. I was curious enough about what the stuff was to ask him. He told me it was pedialyte, a hydration drink formulated for infants and young children who are ill. It's got some sodium, potasium, dextrose, and fructose in it. Of course he's an ex-triathlete and who knows what other voodoo things he does [still can't turn a corner on a bet]. |

You go taste this stuff and tell me again that you think I'm pushing it.
The stuff I was given was bubblegum flavor and it is so far beyond bad I'm not suprised they don't have to pump it into kids. |

I know some triathletes have used an electrolyte drink called "gastrolyte" I think. It is primarily used to treat people with diarrhea gastro, etc, but apparently is good on the road too. Probably similar to what you are referring to. Never tried it myself.

Gastrolyte and similar diarrhoea rehydration therapy mix are expensive. I wouldn't be able to afford the volume required for a hard 2-3 hours ride.

Hi folks I am new to the website. I have the same question. What do we take when we run or ride a bike. My friends told me to take Electrolyte, but they get it whole sale. |

Water isn't all that bad but if you are on a budget whip up some cheaporade.
1 liter of water 1/3 cup sugar 1/4 tsp table salt 1 packet unsweetened koolaid Sucrose, maltodextrin, or glucose work fine but fructose is absorbed to slowly and will upset your stomach. do not exceed 8 % sugar, weight of sugar divided by volume of water in metric will give you the concentration. 1/3 cup of sugar is 66 grams which works out to 6.6% sugar. I've also added a packet of emergen-c at times. |

Thanks. Is the table salt good?
I was talking to my friends. They also use water as a base and mix them with Electrolyte that has the vitamines. Plus it has Sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium (which is all beyond me...). There are 20 packets and they purchase it $10.09 at whole sale price. I caculated that each packet is 0.50 cents and bottle of water. I am confused?? |

Yep, cheaporade uses table salt.
Sounds like the electrolytes your friends are using are inexpensive enough to try. What you need to decide is if you need the sugar and flavoring. If you think you are getting enough carbs with other snacks then you pass on the sugar and I find I need some kind of flavoring to choke it down. Hence the koolaid or crystal light. There are tons of mixes out there for pre ride, in ride, and post ride not to mention stuff like creatine. start with one bottle of just plain water and one mixed with electrolytes or cheaporade. Good luck. |
