I've been to Hilton Head Island many times, but I've never taken my bike. I am able to take it this time and I plan on maintaining my training schedule. Problem is, having been there before, I am all too aware of what a car-centric, bike smashing place this is. What are the preferred bike routes for serious miles on the island? I'll be riding EARLY in the morning to avoid the heat and the cars...

I tried something similar a couple years ago. As you said, it's packed with cars. Roadwise, the south end is a lot better, since it's private. Some of the side roads aren't too bad. But too many stops and interruptions. I also decided to give the beach a try. Believe it or not, the sand is so hard, I could maintain 25 mph using 23mm tires. Pretty freaky! |
