Default London to Sicily

Me and a mate are planning to ride this in the summer, but we're both pretty inexperienced, so any advice anyone could give me would be much appreciated. I'm particularly wondering about how to work out a route and what kit I need to get (including what bike!) Thanks very much.

Heya mate! Have a look at my thread called "Dublin to Rome" in this forum. We should meet up in France somewhere and race over the alps!!!!
