More info please!
Thank you for all the emails sent to our office. We are also trying to find out more about this "new" team. All we know about Caico so far is that the different magazines, Pro Teams and websites refer to them as the "Colombians" but they are really from Puerto Rico (USA). Their coach is the one from Colombia and the Team does have great reinforcements from Colombia. But the group is a USA team based in Puerto Rico. They have been competing in many UCI events with awesome success for a few years now. They have included US races in their calendar with a great debut at the Tour of Virginia where they surprised every one including the top Pro teams. Caico dominated and controlled the race from the start. Their real "checkmate" move came when they hit the mountains where they separated themselves from the competition. Yes there were a few moves to bring them back but these guys are seasoned fast climbers. Some people in the crowd commented... "that Caico guy climbs like a goat, launching away at will.." , well and these comments were not uncommon. We are still trying to find out more about them since apparently, even when they are well managed by Agustin Font, one of the Pros actually racing too, they do not have a website yet. We will keep looking and if anyone has additional info please post it. Thanks' Archibald and Albert - News collaborators |

CAICO Pro Cycling Team was found in the Top Cycling news again. Thank you to Peter Alexander from San Diego CA for the email and the information. CAICO Pro was selected with Team CSC and T-Mobile among the top International teams to participate in the biggets one day race in the USA in Philadelphia. Even when the information sent to our offices by Peter is limited. We found a lot more about this new team in the Pro Cycling Tour website. We are getting somewhere now. Please post any information available about this new team. Archibald and Albert, news collaborators

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 weekend will slow down the release of the CAICO Pro Cycling Team Press Release; at least that was the way the Caico's PR contact we met over the phone informed. The Caico rep could not realease his name since he is not allowed to talk to the media yet but assured that Caico is working on a press release and that they know that in order for news and releases to have a good impact, all other outside news should be kept to the minimum. We tried to explain that there is no relationship and that it would not affect the CAICO announcement but it did not work. He said that his support, family and children efforts are more concentrated in this Holiday weekend release of that famous movie but that it is ready. Well, it really took a lot to find this person who we would like to thank for taking our call during his vacation. If anyone else have additional information about CAICO please post it or let us know. Thank you Albert & Archibald - News collaborators

Caico Pro Cycling Team and Tour of Somerville in the news again. Thank you to Samantha Wo from New York who attended the Tour of Somerville this weekend on May 27, 2007. Samantha read our post here and decided to send us an email. CAICO Pro was participated in the race this weekend in preparation for the Triple-Crown event. She said they looked stronger and that Wendy Cruz positioned himself at the front of the pack before the sprint fighting against full teams like Navigators to finish in a surprising 10th place. She said he only needed an opening to sprint pass the pack but it was controlled by the other teams. Well, we will take her word on it. We know Wendy Cruz is the speed specialist in this team of climbers. Best of luck. And if anyone else have more information about Caico Pro please post it. Thanks, Archibald And Albert - News collaborators

Caico Pro Cycling Team Press release was sent to our office by one very enthusiastic cycling fan, Gilberto Irizarry. He said he has been following cycling in the USA since he moved from Spain 10 years ago. Thank you Gilberto. Her is what he sent:
May 31, 2007 For Immediate Release CAICO / El Meson Pro Cycling Team successful USA debut. Philadelphia, PA - Caico Pro Cycling Team (PUR, USA cycling team now registered in COL for 2007) arrived in Pennsylvania a week early in preparation for the Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling. The Top Pro Cycling teams in the world like T-Mobile from Germany and CSC from Denmark together with top national teams like Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team (USA), HealthNet (USA), Navigators (USA), Jelly Belly (USA) and others will be present with Colombia and Puerto Rico’ s pride “CAICO” among them in this world known event. In a race week of this caliber, where an invitation is required, it is certain everyone will enjoy outstanding competition, as these road gladiators challenge each other one more time this year. What is commonly known as the “Triple Crown” promises to be an exhilarating week of Pro Cycling events and outdoor activities. -Starting on June 3rd with “The Tom Bamford Lancaster Classic” , an 85 miles race (136.8 Kilometers) where the Pro riders will do 13 laps through Lancaster’s streets and Lancaster County Central Park. The Caico riders should find themselves at home in this course which is deceptively tricky as it winds through Lancaster with many sudden short hills and sharp turns. -On Thursday June 7th it moves to Reading for the “Reading Classic”. This one is a 75 miles race (120.7 kilometers) where they will do 11 really fast laps around a 7.6-mile circuit (12.2 Kilometers laps) with a climb at Walnut Street. Another demanding course suited for the seasoned international teams like Caico. –And on June 10th, we move to the last leg of this sensational week, which some enthusiasts refer to as the crown jewel, the “Philadelphia International Championship” now celebrating its 23rd year. It is the longest and richest single-day cycling road race in the United States and a World famous show. The cyclists will compete ten laps of a 14.4-mile circuit (23.1 Kilometers laps). The climbing specialists from Caico will tackle a 17% grade climb for each of the first ten laps. The last three laps include Lemon Hill and Logan Circle for a finish on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. As the Caico team makes its debut in the NRC races and other US Cycling events it is obvious they are the “new” promising team to watch. Coming out on top in their first official Pro race in the USA, the “Tour of Virginia” where Javier Zapata obtained 1st Place in the GC and in the Mountain Classification, they certainly managed to catch the attention and respect from national teams which experienced the intensity of Caico’s consistent and recurrent attacks. Matching the impressive performance of some of the leading national teams have placed Caico in the top 5 in the NRC (National Racing Calendar) results for 2007 out of over 69 USA national teams. “We are very happy with the results of the collective team efforts and to see our team name near the top of the list” commented Franco Font, team captain. For the full list go to http://usacycling.org/forms/nrc/nrc_men_team.pdf With Caicos’s team management based in Puerto Rico (USA), the Colombia (UCI) registered team has been racing mostly in UCI events. Their climbing pedigree is tested regularly as their journey along Latin America (UCI) events often includes monstrous climbs and extremely persistent climbing specialists which say present when the roads point toward the skies. Before coming to the United States, this year, Caico has been dominating the Pro ranks in their shared home countries of Puerto Rico and Colombia. Currently with the help of an experienced Colombian coach and strong Colombian reinforcements, their quest for USA cycling podiums have been very positive. “I think almost every team in the United States have at least one, two or more Hispanics in their roster, and in our case the recruitment of the Colombian climbers helped us earn the nickname “the Colombians” inside the peloton even when we also have riders from Puerto Rico and from the Dominican Republic like Wendy Cruz a rider with multiple National Championships” commented a joyful team captain Franco Font during the “Tour of Virginia”. Caico’s elegant but aggressive style of racing have been noted by many Pro teams, like HealthNet, as they comment regarding Caico’s tactics used to try and gain advantage during the “Joe Martin Stage Race”. This year’s results include: ***(USA debut results added in the following pages) January 2007 “Clásico Toño Coquí” – Ponce, Puerto Rico 1st Franco Font 2nd Edgardo Richiez 3rd Luis Rodriguez “Clásico de Coamo” – Coamo, Puerto Rico 1st Franco Font 2nd Jsean Duprey February 2007 “Vuelta Independencia Nacional” – Dominican Republic Team Classification : 1st Caico Pro Cycling Team AlejandroCortes Alexander Gonzalez Eudaldo Asencio Franco Font Javier Zapata Jorge Martinez General Classification: 5th JorgeMartinez 7th Alexander Gonzalez Stages: Stage 2 2nd Jorge Martinez Stage 8 2nd Eudaldo Asencio Stage 9 4th CRI Alexander Gonzalez Stage 10 4th Alexander Gonzalez March 2007 “Vuelta al Valle” – Cali, Colombia Prologue 4th Alexander Gonzalez Stages: Stage 2 3rd Wendy Cruz 4th Alejandro Cortes Stage3 3rd Wendy Cruz Stage 5 3rd Wendy Cruz April 2007 “Vuelta Anapoima Cundinamarca” - Colombia General Classification: 2nd Javier Zapata Mountain Classification: 1st Javier Zapata Team Classification: 3rd Caico Pro Cycling Team Alejandro Cortes Jairo Jaimes Javier Zapata Jorge Martinez Stages: Stage 2 1st Javier Zapata “Clásico San German” – San German, Puerto Rico 1st Luis Rodriguez 2nd Edgardo Richiez 3rd Pedro Monroig “Tour of Virginia” – Virginia, USA ***(USA 2007 Debut) General Classification: 1st Javier Zapata 6th Alejandro Cortes Mountain Classification: 1st Javier Zapata 3rd Jorge Martinez Team Classification: 1st Caico Pro Cycling Team Alejandro Cortes Alexander Gonzalez Franco Font Javier Zapata Jorge Martinez Wendy Cruz Stages: Stage 2 2nd Wendy Cruz 4th Javier Zapata Stage 3 1st Javier Zapata 8th Alejandro Cortes Stage 5 7th Wendy Cruz Stage 6 6th Alejandro Cortes Stage 7 6th Javier Zapata May 2007 “II Reto a la Piquiña” - Salinas, Puerto Rico 1st Ruben Borrero 2nd Edgardo Richiez “Clasico San Fernando” - Carolina, Puerto Rico 1st Edgardo Richiez Sub-23 1st Edwin Ramos 2nd Josean Duprey “Joe Martin Stage Race”- Arkansas, USA General Classification: 4th Javier Zapata 10th Alexander Gonzalez 17th Jorge Martinez Team Classification: 2nd Caico Pro Cycling Team Alejandro Cortes Alexander Gonzalez Eudaldo Asencio Franco Font Javier Zapata Jorge Martinez Wendy Cruz Stages: Stage 2 3ro Wendy Cruz Stage 3 CRI 3rd Javier Zapata 11th Alexander Gonzalez 15th Jorge Martinez Stage 4 4th Alexander Gonzalez “Tri Peaks” – Arkansas, USA General Classification: 7th Jorge Martinez 11th Alexander Gonzalez Stages: Stage 1 7th Jorge Martinez Stage 5 7th Javier Zapata 10th Jorge Martinez 12th Alexander Gonzalez “Bounbrook Criterium” – Somerville, NJ, USA 2nd Wendy Cruz 10th Alexander Gonzalez “Tour of Somerville” - , Somerville, NJ, USA 10th Wendy Cruz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Official team address: AHF Agentes de Seguros / Caico Calle Padre Feliciano # 3 San Sebastian, Puerto Rico 00685 Tel: +1 787 896 2533 Fax: +1 787 896 2525 Team Manager Mr. FONT LOPEZ Agustin H. For Immediate Release CAICO / El Meson Pro Cycling Team in the Triple-Crown of Cycling. Philadelphia, PA - Caico Pro Cycling Team (PUR, USA cycling team now registered in COL for 2007) on June 7th, 2007 showed their true colors at the “PCT Reading Classic” and at the “Philadelphia International Championship” on June 10th, 2007. At the PCT Reading Classic on Thursday, amazing speeds and aggressive attacks entertained the huge crowd of cycling fans all day after a slow start due to some logistical challenges. When all the barricades and banners were finally set the enthusiasm was felt in the air. Hats off to Javier Zapata from CAICO who made sure he is present in the next Reading Classic event video or DVD with a heroic attempt to earn “Hill Climb” points. Javier, Kasper Klostergaard from CSC (Denmark) and Christian Meier from Symmetrics Cycling Team (Canada) rolled away in the first 7 fast paced laps and quickly developed a 1:00 min lead ahead of the peloton. On their 8th lap the three riders in the break met the Mount Penn climb for the first time. This is where Javier Zapata outperformed everyone with an impressive effort where he earned the first “Hill Climb” points. Looking strong while reaching the top alone most likely triggered a reaction form T-Mobile, Toyota-United, HealthNet and Navigators who organized and moved to bring him back while the rest of the Caico gladiators remained in the pack. To have an idea of how hard the climb is, out of hundreds that started only about 70 riders were left to start the second climb attempt. “As we gain more experience, obviously still it is a privilege for Caico to be racing against the top teams in the world like CSC and T-Mobile, it is a great opportunity and I think in one way or another, with Javier’s performance today, we want to demonstrate that we are here to compete and to let ourselves show” commented Franco Font, team captain at the finish of the Reading Classic. “These are teams, some currently in training, which have several riders who will be racing in France next month” Font added. T-Mobile, Toyota-United, HealthNet and Navigators kept a close eye on the break away group as it developed. We bet that words like “Javier”, “Caico” and “strong” could be heard over radios and scanners as Zapata reached the top of the Mount Penn climb. The mighty strength of a “Tour de France” style peloton devoured the break shortly after. This could be a double edge show for the Caico climbing armada. On Sunday, the Caico team said present at the closing event of the Triple-Crown of cycling, the world famous “Philadelphia International Championship” now celebrating its 23rd year. This is the longest and richest single-day cycling road race in the United States. The cyclists battled for ten laps of a 14.4-mile circuit (23.1 Kilometers laps). The Pros covered 156 miles (251 kilometers) in only 5:45:51. The average speed was 27.6 mph. From the beginning of the race the climbing specialists from Caico were near the front of the peloton. They aggressively tackled the 17% grade climb prompting reaction from the top teams. Navigators, T-Mobile, CSC and Tecos kept a close eye on any move. There were so many strong contenders that almost every team took a turn at the front bringing any break back. Attacks were constant. During the second lap they got organized for their attack and Jorge Martinez (Caico) reached the top of this monster hill nicknamed “The Wall” in 2nd place earning KOM points just behind Alejandro Borrajo (Argentina) from the Rite Aid Pro Cycling. The riders did this climb ten times in the first ten laps. The last three laps include Lemon Hill and Logan Circle for a finish on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. On the KOM #2 over Lemon Hill, Neil Shirley (Jittery Joes) got 1st, Alexander Gonzalez (Caico) got 2nd and Eduardo Colon (Caico) got 3rd earning more KOM points. During the entire race it was a challenge to predict the attacks. They were coming from all over on the flats, right before the climbs, in the middle of the climbs and even at the feed zones. All the main teams fought to get away and get KOM points. The well orchestrated moves and breaks at times looked like they were going to succeed, but the peloton was very strong. The constant moves took a toll on Alexander Gonzales (Caico) when he broke his bike’s chain while trying to bridge up into a break. The caliber of riders was at its best with some teams like CSC and T-Mobile racing in the USA in preparation for the “Tour de France” next month. The field of riders even included Marco Pinotti (T-Mobile) wearer of the Pink Jersey in the 2007 “Giro di Italia”. The latest: A Florida group informed us via email that the Caico "climbers" will be attending three races in Florida this weekend - June 23-25.
Interesting since we have heard this "climbing specialists" team wanted to get exposed to other types of racing like flat and fast criteriums. This kind of racing is popular here in the USA but not where they come from where hill climbs and "mountains" are the order of the day. Well, if it is true, we wish them good luck and hope they like it so they can visit more often. Albert and Archibald - News Collaborators |

Thank you for waiting. Here is the Press Release we received. Feel free to post anything related to Caico or email to CaicoProCyclingTeam@Yahoo.com - Albert and Archibald - News Collaborators
July 23, 2007 For Immediate Release CAICO / El Meson Pro Cycling Team spectacular performance at the Pan-American Games. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Caico Pro Cycling Team (PUR, USA cycling team now registered in COL for 2007) have been busy with several podium finishes including “Gold” in the 2007 PanAm Games in the beautiful Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As the whole world watches the top cycling event, the Tour de France, Caico’s group has been participating in some of the best races in Latin America. Starting with the usual fast and aggressive style of racing in Puerto Rico, where their counterparts teammates have been dominating the field making sure their team jerseys are in every picture at the finish line. Sometimes taking not only first, but second, third and fourth place in the same event and completely taking over the available podium spots and then some. The Tour de Cure in San German, Puerto Rico was demolished by Caico with Edgardo Richiez obtaining the victory, with Luis Torres in second place, Josean Duprey in third place and Ruben Borrero in fourth. In the island’s classics similar results were recorded at the “3rd Morovis Classic” in Morovis Puerto Rico. Edgardo Richiez won this classic event with Ruben Borrero just behind in second place, Luis Rodriguez in fourth and Franco Font in fifth place. Ruben Borrero also obtained the first spot winning the “1st Subway Classic” in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. Spectators saw one of the best races in this events first year with exciting sprint finishes. “I am a fan who likes all aspects of cycling, and definitely was good to see a climber like Ruben break away and win that way, it was very exciting” commented a very enthusiastic Yomarah Santos, resident of Vega Alta. Once again our climbing machine, Javier Zapata (COL), winner of the 2007 Tour of Virginia, performed as expected obtaining the 1st place in the General Classification in the “Classico de la Ciudad de Girardot”, a 4 stages event in Girardot, Colombia. Teams fought from the beginning stage, with Caico working as one, communicating constantly making sure no one escaped. With a magnificent effort from Zapata in the time trial, he finished with the same time and tied with Marlon Perez, triggering a response from the Caico group with resulted in the overall victory and 2nd in the Team Classification. On Saturday July 21st, in The 2007 PanAm Games Road cycling event, Caico’s Wendy Cruz (DOM) won the first place earning the first “Gold Medal” for the team against an excellent group of competitors. Silver was awarded to Emile Abraham (TRI) and Bronze to Luciano Pagliarini (BRA). “It was a great race, tough, but a great race. I felt very happy when I saw I was going to win, I can not explain the feeling” commented an obviously very happy Wendy Cruz after such a special moment at the end of the Road Race at the “Parque de Flamengo”, Brazil. In the “Madison” event Caico’s Alexander Gonzalez won the “Silver Medal” with the help of teammate Jose Serpa to finish another weekend full of success. The entire Caico Pro Cycling Team management group wanted to congratulate Wendy Cruz in his “Gold Medal” victory and Alexander Gonzalez in his “Silver Medal” in the PanAm Games. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Official team address: AHF Agentes de Seguros / Caico Calle Padre Feliciano # 3 San Sebastian, Puerto Rico 00685 Tel: +1 787 896 2533 Fax: +1 787 896 2525 Team Manager Mr. FONT LOPEZ Agustin H. There are some areas already available to the public. The address is www.caicoprocyclingteam.com. For now there are limited action photos of the team and news briefs.

This is what we received... September 13, 2007 For Immediate Release CAICO / El Meson Pro Cycling Team on top and on target to close their sensational season with a “fiesta”. Guaynabo, Puerto Rico - Caico Pro Cycling Team (PUR, USA cycling team now registered in COL for 2007) keeps getting outstanding results as the 2007 Cycling season reaches its closing events. Starting with the city of Cayey, Puerto Rico which was the best canvas the Caico group could have used to paint a picture perfect performance at this event. One of the hilliest cities in the Caribbean island brought some of the best competition seen this year. The weather was no match to the riders and committed organizers who provided a well run event even with one heavy rain day. The event included a number of the top riders from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Dominican Republic and USA. Every team was aware of the challenge the Cayey Mountains were going to bring but the Caico guys were ready. Caico easily dominated the event winning the top spots in every stage. Amazing! For their next event they moved to the IV Bayamon Grand Prix, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico where these gladiators not only won the first place again, with Agustin Font ahead, but also second place with Alexander Gonzalez, third place with Jorge Martinez, forth place with Javier Zapata, fifth place with Alejandro Cortes and Edgardo Richiez in eight. The finish line looked covered in blue and yellow colors in front of a multitude of cheering fans. In the beginning of the month of September the Caico group participated in the “Clasico Ruedas Doradas” in Dorado, Puerto Rico. After several fast paced circuit laps, with 4 laps to go, the team organized Ruben Borrero, time trialist Edgardo Richiez, Alejandro Cortes and Jorge Martinez for the attack. The four were able to stay away until the end of the race to win again the top 4 places in the same mentioned order, with Javier Zapata, their under-23 rider Pedro Monroig and Wendy Cruz close behind. “We definitely went over our tactics before the race. And we demonstrated the versatility of the team with Ruben’s win” mentioned team captain Franco Font after the event. Agustin worked as a support rider at the Dorado event. The very next week the team raced at the event everyone was waiting for this year. The “Circuito Internacional de Ciclismo en el Expreso 834”. In this 3 stage race Caico watched every move their competition did in an effort to catch them off guard. No one could get away in this battle of climbers with the Caico armada present. The first stage was an intense Time Trial or as they call it a “Crono”. It was won by Edwin Parra from one of the top Colombian teams “Colombia Es Pasion”. Javier Zapata placed second but only 4 seconds behind Parra. Carlos Alzate from “Colombia Es Pasion” finished in 3rd and Jorge Martinez finished in 4th only 9 seconds behind Alzate. In fifth place following Martinez was another “Colombia Es Pasion” rider, Jairo Salas. After the first stage everyone knew how strong the other teams were. For the second stage, the Caico group decided to attack as much as possible and constantly to try to weaken the competition before the third and toughest stage. Stage 2 was not too demanding so the intensity was kept high on purpose. The third and last stage was expected to be harder but the Team planned to keep the pressure from the beginning with the intention to protect Jorge Martinez lead. Duane Dickey from AeroSpace Engineering Cycling Team (USA) went on the attack aggressively and Jorge Martinez quickly responded followed closely by one Colombia Es Pasion rider who later was not able to keep up with the ferocious pace of Martinez and Dickey. At the end Jorge Martinez obtained the General Classification win followed by Javier Zapata in 4th place, Alejandro Cortes in 7th and Alexander Gonzalez in 10th. “We new there was going to be a battle in the mountains. Everyone was ready but you always get the “butterflies” in your stomach before tough events like this one. But we are happy, very happy” commented a very excited Jorge Martinez at the end of the last stage. As we get closer to the end of what has been an outrageous season for the team, we know their hearts beat louder and louder in expectation. Will they finish this almost perfect season with another win? Time Trialist Edgardo Richiez most likely is in position to win the Series Championship. “Well we always say, it is not over ‘til is over. But remember, we are already thinking about next year” commented with a smile Agustin Font at the finish line area after the Guaynabo event. We just need to stay tuned and see how this wonderful journey thru the 2007 Cycling Season comes to a close. “I do not know, you tell me, but I think the team deserve it, they deserve a “Gran Fiesta” to celebrate when all this is over” joyfully responded Font to our question of “If he thought the team was going to celebrate this year’s accomplishments with a “Fiesta”. We will see. “Circuito Internacional de Ciclismo en el Expreso 834” Stage 1 – Time Trial 2nd Javier Zapata 4th Jorge Martinez 9th Alejandro Cortes 30th Ruben Borrero 37th Agustin Font 39th Alexander Gonzalez “Circuito Internacional de Ciclismo en el Expreso 834” Stage 2 – Top Ten 2nd Javier Zapata 4th Jorge Martinez 9th Alejandro Cortes “Circuito Internacional de Ciclismo en el Expreso 834” Stage 3 – Top Ten 2nd Jorge Martinez 3rd Javier Zapata 7th Alexander Gonzalez 9th Alejandro Cortez “Circuito Internacional de Ciclismo en el Expreso 834” General Clasification 1st Jorge Martinez |
