Early on Sunday morning in Salt Lake City, UT a man and his wife were returning home from a friends house on their bicycles when they encountered a large box truck reversing towards them. The man, Marty Kasteler, slapped the side of the truck as a courtesy to let the driver know that he and his wife were behind him. The driver of the truck then maliciously ran Marty over with his truck and drug him a few feet. At the time of this post, Marty is in the ICU of a Utah hospital clinging to life.
This story hits home for two reasons; I myself am an avid cyclist, and Marty Kasteler is my wife's closest cousin. Marty is a good man. He devotes alot of his time and hard-earned money to volunteer work and charity. He is a hard-core cyclist and uses a bike as his ONLY means of transportation. He has never done anything in his life to harm another human being and definetly did not deserve, nor provoke this random act of violence. Below is a link to his story. It is a website operated by a close friend of Marty's and will also link you to local news stories about this tragic event. http://www.hektik.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3460 Please help my wife and I get the word out about this horrible incident so that it may never happen to anyone that you know and love. Thank You, SSG_Vito |

Terrible to hear what happened to your mate. Ran over by a truck, Jesus. When those things go past me I start shaking. Hope all becomes well. ![]()

Similar to this incident:
http://www.thebikezone.org.uk/motorcarnage/baxter.html Such attacks are horrible, but very rare. Don't let it stop you cycling.

I won't stop cycling because of it, although this is one reason for favoring my mountain bike lately (that and I live in Colorado). I just wanted to make people aware of this tragic incident. |

I have a state license to carry a loaded handgun. Anyone who attacks me must be willing to trade their life as well.
