on a usual mid-week training schedule I do hill repeats (at 10-20% above FTP) and one day a week FTP 2x20 (or 3x15) intervals. A typical in-city hill I use is optimal and I do 6-8 at around 4 minutes at an average of say 320-340 watts. But yesterday I rode out to our local big hill (2.5 miles, 1,200 feet gain, 8% avg slope) and did various routes as follows:
1. one segment - 10 minutes 270 watts avg 2. one side 21 minutes 270 watts avg 3. one other side - 12 minutes 276 watts avg Obviously there were big chunks of time above 300W but given flats and rollers averages are what they are. Given the averages and durations - does this really count as a "hill" day? Given this choice of a day should the other hard day be "true" hill repeats or a typical 2x20 interval day? thanks

Sounds like you dida variation on the normal threshold workout. If you want to stay "on schedule", I'd do your normal 4 minute hill for the other workout. Nothing wrong with changing it up every now and again, variety is good. |
