Default typical training program

What's a typical training program for cycling? I've been searching the internet but most of the articles I find are specialized advice and tips. I'm a college student who was a serious runner in high school so I've trained hard in the past. I've had a Giant OCRC3 for about a year and have done a couple of sprint triathlons. Right now I just ride between 15 and 25 miles a couple times a week. I'd like to start low to get used to riding more but my goal is to get to where I can ride 50's here and there or compete in Triathlons with 25 mile rides. Looking to improve both speed and distance. If anyone has a chance to respond I'd really appreciate it! Thanks a lot, Jim

If you are intested in training by HR then Friel's 'the cyclist training bible' is a good start.
If you want to get into more depth, try Allen & Coggan's 'training and racing with a power meter'

You mentioned that you were a serious runner in HS.
How much involvement in the training program did you have?
Did your coach just tell you what your workout was for the day and you went and did it?
I ask because cycling performance (other than very short durations), much like running, is largely determined by sustainable power. So if you were quite involved, then you have already been exposed to many of the principles that will work for cycling training.

Default Re: typical training program

I trained between seasons in the summer and winter so I was very involved in my own training. I'd usually do a couple of timed runs a week (3 mile on Tuesday, 6 mile on Thursday, possibly a race on Saturday, etc.) and long recovery runs on other days. About midways through the seasons I usually started doing long workouts with 400m fast intervals. So that's really what I know about athletic training. Thanks for the references, I'll definitely check out what the books have to say.
