I know how you feel, train 99% alone. Only riders I see are the ones I am catching and dropping......

There's an upside to training alone, you get no one to blame but yourself. BTW, Memph, YOU never get caught and dropped? I get caught about half the amount of times that I catch.

I never wrote that I have never been caught. If that was the case then I should be in the TdF winning by hours not seconds. Just in my area, seems like I hardly get caught....

back if someones coming i step it up to
hold them off, and if i am caught i dont let
them ride away no matter how hard it hurts.

I am basically the same, except tht one ever rides me down . If someone does catch me, I'll ask if they want company. Ihate it when I catch someone and then they try to hang on. I love to drop it into lower chainring and spin like crazy and drop them.

I once was told this rule by an old pro racer: You don't race to train; you train to race.

I used to do all my century training alone until a friend talked me into joining the local bike club. Throw out the HR monitor and ride with a good club and you'll get more out of it. Didn't really realize what I was missing.

Any good clubs in your area?

Yes, there are 2 or 3 good clubs in my area. Some of us (50-100 riders) go for a face spin most Sundays. Just the rest of the week, I train alone. Once in a large pack, you can tell who has group experience....

i just strated doing club rides every sunday,
right now we are training for a big race that
draws 7k riders from all over, we are riding the
course. i notice when i ride alone 3- 4 hours
im much more tired then doing same distance
with group. last years best time for the 109 mile
race was 4:24 ventura from us postal won it,
lance has also did this race(El Tour De Tucson)
the training rides are about 75 riders and about
10 of us finish 1st. today me and another rider
raced for finish last year he finished 14 min behind
but i was happy to finish 2nd, we simulate race conditions
on these rides its a blast

yea you can tell who has experience all right, my 1st
race wich was my 1st group ride i immediatly could
tell who was good i could tell who was gonna win
i finished 3rd, and the guy that won that race always
finishes up front on our group rides, well today he
wasnt up to par cuz we dropped him. there was
another rider showing off his state champ jersey
who also got dropped, going off the front several
times only to get caught.

Of course you do not feel as exhausted riding in a large group. Do not have to deal with head/cross winds as a solo rider. Plus it just seems like the time go faster ina group.

I enjoy training alone over group training. Prepares me for solo breaks or chasing down other breaks. I do group rides only as a way to judge my fitness and stay group sharp. Knowing how to act, ride, behave in a group.

That race sounds great. Would love to move some place warmer where I could train year round outside.....

That is awesome that your 1st group ride was a race that you finished so high in. Most non experienced group riders would feel nervous about rubbing wheels, being so close to other riders and not able to read the field. So they get spit on the back, regardless of fitness level. This was like you winning a lottery to place so high in 1st group ride.

I am the type of rider who would jump a few times. Would prefer to show some strength by going off the front and finishing with main group. Then just sitting in group entire ride/race and finishing in group. This is a weaker ride......
