Default Your scariest moment?

Sunday morning I had mine.

Downhill on a road bike doing around 60km I ran over, what I think was, a small piece of jagged metal and blew both tyres at the same time (OK split seconds difference). Instantly I was on the rims... no control.

I squeezed the brakes gently, trying to keep the bike upright, and locked the wheels with a sickening grinding sound and I started to drift sideways. I eased off the brakes and straightened up a bit. I was sure I was going to crash and slightest shift in body weight would cause a crash, I couldn't even clip-out. I managed to slow down with gentle pressure to the brakes. The tyres were shreaded, rims serrated, HR 220 (I could hear my heat pounding in my ears) and hands stayed shaking for 10 mins.

Thinking back I wasn't worried about the bike AT ALL... I must have been scared.

I was going to mention when I took a tumble over the handlebars, but that was nothing compared to dom's story.

It was a group ride and it had been raining that morning. We had a total of 9 punctures including my two. I gave away my two spare tubes and got left behind going up the hill... so I was on my own. My wife was coming to pick us up at the end of the ride so I got on the mobile and said... "Can you bring me another bike?" I felt like a pro.. except it took 30 mins for her to arrive.

The rims, tyres and tubes are all stuffed.... bike and ride shaken but not stirred.

My scariest moment was when I was about 14 and riding way out by myself. I was riding through a saddle when a car came barrelling over the hill in front of me. The driver saw me and aimed right for me. I headed off the roadway into the ditch on the side of the road and the car went over the hill behind me. i heard hin slowing down and turning around so I got behind the nearest telephone pole. He came past me again, turned around and roared past me a third time. I was keeping the phone pole between him and me and thankfully he wasn't crazy enough to run into the pole to get me. After passing me three times, he left for good, but I stayed behind the pole for a good fifteen minutes after that.

I don't know why the driver did this. To the best of my knowledge I didn't do anything that would have angered anyone during my ride. I guess he was just having a bad day. BTW, when someone is trying to kill you, one of the last things on you mind is trying to get his license plate number.

Aside from that, I would say that dogs have scared me pretty badly. I had one come at me just as I was finishing climbing out of a valley and another that chased me up a nice steep hill. That was probably the fastest climb that I have ever done, on a MTB no less!
