Default thru axle or QR? heads, tails, heads,.....

I'm getting an 04 SPV sherman firefly from Manitou. I can't decide between thru axle or QR. I know
this is pathetic, but I couldn't sleep last night thinking about this. There's no cost difference to
me as it's a warranty thing. I do mostly XC riding, but I break everything. However, my riding
buddies all have 24 lb XC rigs and get way too much enjoyment out of dragging me and my 38 lb pig up
every hill they can find. I'm torn between saving the weight so I can run their skinny 24 lb butts
over, and getting a bit more beef.

Any opinions/recomendations/experiences on this?

I run a thru-axle on my xc bike, no problems at all. How many times do you take your front wheel
off? As for the extra weight?? I can't say I would notice it. Definitely recommed it.

You may end up needing a new front hub, if you do you might consider getting one which can be
switched to fit thru-axle and standard axle hubs such as the Hope Big 'Un or Hope Bulb.

Depends on what you're going to be doing with the fork and the brakes and size of the rotor you
will be using.

I already have an 8", but I'm not married to it. No big drops, no more than 3" usually. Lots of high
speed rock gardens full of baby heads & pumpkins.

Rarely take front wheel off. Only for flats. I could definitely feel the weight in my dorado SC, but
this would be a couple of lbs less. (Yes, they lie a dorado SC is no where even close to 5.5 lbs.)

Already have a 20 mil hub. So, from your point it sounds like a no brainer.

I run an 8" with a QR on my Jr T. I've had no problems with it thus far. Some people dislike using a
QR with an 8" because of the amount of flex and feedback that you get from the braking pressure on
the fork. Then again, I don't weigh as much as a normal human and I don't destroy my equipment, so I
don't have those problems.

Hmm, good point, I hadn't considered brake induced fork warp. I'm barely sub-clydesdale on a good
day. It's looking like the 20 mm might be the winner.

Thanks, Bruce.

Yeah, I say go for it too. When I get around to getting a new Z1or ?, I'll be switching to a 20mm.
Plus, it will give me an emergency back-up wheel for both rigs.

Hey, I just remembered the Dorado SC (wasn't that it?). What happened to it?

Very cool that Manitou is taking care of you :^ )

BTW, I've heard nothing but good things from people who rode/ride the firefly.

Isn't the Dorado SC an obscene amount of money? and isn't the firefly about half the price?

Yeah, I had the dorado SC, but I didn't pay that much for it. The firefly is more. I got it back
from Manitou after a complete rebuild, and it still leaked, so they offered to swap me as the dorado
SC is being phased out since it was never a good seller and was kinda heavy.

I sent the dorado back yesterday. I'm just waiting for some issue to come up and void the whole
thing. I'll believe it when I see it. Although, Manitou has really gone above and beyond what I
would have expected in all of my dealings with their customer service. For every broken thing
I've ever sent them, they've just charged for shipping. Admittedly I was disappointed when the
dorado still leaked, but if I really do get an 04 SPV firefly out it, I'll never buy a fork from
anyone else :-)

Sounds like you've caught a good deal, good to hear of good customer service as well.

Steve.
