Question difference in racing bikes old and new

When/what year did racin bikes go from having the gear levers on the cross frame to underneath the brake levers?

1991 - Shimano Dura Ace, it was such a welcomed improvement that it caught on very quickly and spread to other Shimano groups and Campagnolo's too.
