New Build
I was thinking of building a bike of my own. I've looked over a few websites for parts but I'm still trying to figure out which components to get. I don't want to go all out since I only go out here and there (I mainly a road rider). I found a cheap motobecane frame on e-bay. I am only looking for front suspension, but I would like disk brakes, but don't need hydraulic brakes. I think I have deceided I wanted to try and go with SRAM components to see how they hold up, but not sure of which level to go with. I think the x-7, but wanted to see what you all thought since I don't need top of the line, but I don't want the cheapest ones either. Any ideas on this or any other pointers? I'm not sure if I Want to build the wheels yet or not...depends on how over budget everything else goes...haha

for disk brake look at Avid bb5. they are machanical and good for the money. Manitou or Rock Shox are good forks.nothing too fancy. i have the x-7 on by bike. i havent had any problems and been riding for two years w/ x-7.

So I didn't build a new one--couldn't get the money. So I tore down my old one, cleaned it, replaced parts and now I'm attempting to reassemble. One problem...When I put the rear wheel on, the spacing seems to be exactly one cog off when shifting. I flipped the axle (the threads were messed up on the once side and I couldn't tighten the cone properly) and it seemed to go together properly. Did I do something wrong? I simply flipped the cone nut, spacer and lock nut to the other side. I thought the spacer is what matters, if I don't change it, I thought I should be good...yes/no?
Also, The wheel looks like it is centered in the brakes, but not between the seat stays. Is this normal for a mountain bike? My other 2 road bikes, everything is centered. I know if sounds dumb and makes me look pathetic...maybe I'm thinking about it too much and getting frusrated? Any help/advice would be apprciated. Thanks |
