I have a 1999 Pinarello Sestriere which I bought in 2000. It came with Veloce groupset & Ambrosio Balance wheels. Soon after getting it, I upgraded the wheels to the Campagnolo Shamal, probably around 2001/2 models, cant remember. Anyway, the book says they weigh 1820g.
I'm looking to get a new Pinarello and the budget is putting the FP5 model in my sights, with the Carbon frame. The local bike shop gets them in with Ultegra 10spd and Shimano WH-RS10 wheelsets. My research suggests the supplied wheelset is slightly heavier than my Shamals by about 30g. I prefer Campagnolo & the bike shop would change Ultegra to Centaur for me & I'm probably not interested in the Shimano wheels then. So the question is, what wheelset would be a good upgrade? I'd prefer to stick with Campagnolo or Fulcrum. Obviously something like another set of Shamals or Fulcrum Racing Zero would be nice but they're at the more expensive end of the range. I'm wondering how much wheels have developed since my first Shamals? Something like the Campag Eurus would seem to be about 250g or so lighter than my current Shamals but how would they compare aerodynamically? Would todays wheels be just so much better that there's no comparison or is it more marginal than that? I'm just trying to work out where my old Shamals now fit in today's range in terms of weight/performance so I can ensure what I choose is better. Any tips appreciated. |

There is no "upgrade" that will be better than the Shamals....unless you get carbon deep-rim wheels like the Campy Bora or Fulcrum Racing Speed (basically the same wheel!)...and even then, the only thing that will be different is that they will be lighter...IF you consider that an upgrade.
Do not be misled by current marketing - since the days that those Shamals were produced, every company has started following the Mavic sales model - give 'em crap, hype it up as the next best thing, and make miniscule reductions in weight (on the order of 20 or 30 grams or so) in later models as an "improvement"....all the while throwing out any real aero considerations...witness the Ksyrium series "evolvement" over the last 6 years, and other companies like Campy following suit (ie, now using FAT alu non-aero spokes in the Eurus and their "new" shamals ), all in the name of profit.Keep the Shamals! |

Thanks Brian, that's excellent information. The Shamals are still in great shape, so I could save myself some money using those & just put the Ambrosio wheels back on the old Pinarello & retain it as a 'classic'.
