Default Painting the Frame

I recently bought an old Schwinn Varsity and I want to convert it to a fixed gear but I need to repaint it. I have already sanded it down to the steel and primed it. I just finished wet sanding the primer. I am looking for any suggestions or tips anyone could give me regarding how to paint it, what type of paint to use, ect...

Thanks!!!
Jack

Hi Jack,

In the forums search spot type in the word "paint". Look for a thread started by Reckon titled "How To Paint a Bike". It's very informativeand might tell you what you need to know. Good luck!

Scott

I've done automotive repaints(at home) so I'd just get some left over colour that I have and do it with that. Then I would use a two pot (material and hardener) clear coat over that.

Like you I'm going to repaint my single gear(freewheel) training bike frame. I'm going to use a bright orange (like it and safe colour) I did a motorbike of mine with a few years ago, get some Colnago decals(always wanted a Colnago and its a lugged frame so will suit them), fit them and then clear coat it. Its a steel frame so I'll have it sandblasted first and he'll prime it for me.
Should look cool

Are you really going to paint some random frame and put Colnago decals on it? Tell me your joking. Thats just kind of silly. There is no point in having the decals unless you are trying to convince other people you have a colnago. You know its not a Colnago. Use decals, sure, but dont try and pawn off your bike as something its not.

Of course I'm not going to try and sell it !! Its just a fun thing for me . I really like the bike and want to keep it. If I did sell it(in the years ahead) I'd at least tell the buyer the truth.

On the subject of decals, maybe you could convince someone the varsity was carbon due to the shape of the frame tubes! at least until they picked it up...

Yeah, but with all that weight, the thing ought to be fairly theft-proof....even sporting the Colnago decals. Speaking of obvious fakes, I used to work with a guy who had the SF Prancing Horse emblems on his Ford Pinto
