Default Bike parts in NZ?

Hiya,

We are due to emigrate to New Zealand in approx 3-4 month time, although my bike is due to be packed ready for shipping in a couple of weeks :-(

I know the gears and chain need servicing and replacing ... and thought I'd ask whether it'd be cheaper to buy here in the UK and pack ready for shipment, or just buy new parts in NZ?

TIA,

Lou

I buy all that sort of thing online, often for less than 50% of retail in the shops. Generally either from www.probikekit.com (who are in Cumbria) or from www.torpedo7.com (NZ based).

Buy it online or bring it with you. Bike bits are expensive in the shops here. For example PBK's tyres are NZD$50 for something that will cost NZD$100 retail. Chains, cassettes etc likewise.

Torpedo 7 is very good, if ever, (its only happened once for me), they stuff up an order they do everything to put it right. ActiveKiwi do parts but the range is limited and pricey. Bike Barn do online stuff and they are good.

For a full service at a LBS can range from 50-100 bucks depending what sort of service you are after. My commuter is going in and having its rimms replaced, back cassette, (hmm probabily a new chain as well come to think of it), and full service and I'm being charged around $330 which I think is ok.

Thing is I've struggled finding a good bike shop here in NZ. I miss the choice of having 3-4 really good bike shops, competeting against each other in any one city to choose from. Alot of people I know import parts from the uk or the states as you just cannot get stuff here. Forks now have to be sent away for a service, which I don't recall happening in the UK.

Sorry rambling again. Still the countryside makes up for it.
