Atherton Tablelands bikeriders paradise

Well there were 6 of us, set off from Herberton which is surrounded by
hills, hills and more hills on Saturday morning. We spent the day doing back
roads around the farming districts of the Southern Atherton Tablelands.
WOW - the roads are terrific, lots of hills but all manageable and
absolutely no traffic. The scenery is superb, rolling green hills whereever
u looked. We were on a main arterial road for maybe 5 kms and considering
the day was 75kms long that is pretty good.
Take your lunch, sit by a creek and wait for platypus, then push on forever
up the hills to Lake Eacham Caravan Park where we had a cabin for the night
for a cost of $16 a head (well worth it, we all had beds made with clean
sheets, a clean towel each and access to a communal kitchen ). There was no
one else staying in the park so we had it to ourselves. The commmunal
kitchen is great, even has a fireplace which we had roaring!
Sunday saw us set off for Atherton, more back roads and rolling hills. All
in all a great weekend, probably only 120kms all up but considering the
hills involved that is enough. We finished off with a Coffee in Atherton and
talked about doing it all again. If anyone out there wants to ride in
traffic free paradise consider the back roads of the Atherton Tablelands!

Cheers for that report Kathy, sounds like a great biking weekend. My
girl and I were up that way last October, however we were driving a
sedan and camping around the place. We found it difficult to get away
from the popular places due to not really knowing the place and being,
unfortunately, on a bit of a deadline. Will definitely make sure to have
a better look around the "back roads" next time so we can plan some rides.
