Default Sugino Crankset 171mm???

Hi, was just taking apart an old steel road bike and when i removed the crankset it was stamped with 171mm's. Was just wondering whether or not that this is correct??? i have measured and it seems to be correct but i thought that cranksets come in 170mm and 172.5mm etc.

Cranksets come in all different sizes, depending upon the manufacturer. You will usually see anywhere from 169mm to 173mm. I have an old Sugino 171mm crankset as well as a not so old 171mm Shimano crankset. The sizes available for any group of cranksets depends upon what the manufacturer decides they are going to offer.

That is interesting, you learn something new every day. I was convinced that the 'standard' crankset lengths for relatively modern cranks were the usual that we are used to seeing in shops... not these somewhat weird sizes like a 171 or 173...
