14:53 CEST
One of the riders who is now out of the race is Gerolsteiner's Andrea Moletta. The team took him out after his father was stopped on his way to the Giro by the Italian anti-doping investigators. He was in a car with two other people, and they were found to have a lot of Viagra with them – either 82 tablets or 82 packages, depending on which source you read. This is from Cycling news live commentary for stage 12 How can Viagra help you in a bike race? |

Pubmed link: http://tinyurl.com/543m2k In summary, it appears that Viagra can improve VO2 and blood oxygenation in acute hypoxic conditions. Although it does nothing in normoxic conditions, and lung capacity is not the limiting factor in sport, it would therefore not benefit cyclists in the least. That wouldn't stop racers from taking it 'just in case'. However, it may provide a marginal benefit in highly polluted Beijing and this is the time of year to test it under race conditions, to establish whether it can be well tolerated with no negative side effects. |

Maybe it isn't for the cyclists. Maybe it's for the officials who are hoping to bang the podium girls. You know those Italians' libidos are notorious. R |

Probably works as well as Actovegin. Also reports that they found a syringe hidden in a tube of toothpaste and a cooler with as yet unidentified substances in it. |

> How can Viagra help you in a bike race?
It helps in adjustment to altitude. Viagra results in increased synthesis of nitric oxide, which dilates the pulmonary arteries, eliminates a phenomenon called hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, and increases ventilation-perfusion matching. In less technical terms, sudden exposure to the lower levels of oxygen at altitude causes the blood supply to the lungs to constrict. Viagra dilates these arteries, and allows more blood flow to the lungs so that the oxygen and blood mix more effectively. The drug was initially developed for this effect and is used in critical care / cardiology for patients with pulmonary hypertension. It's effects on penile vasodilation were initially discovered as a side effect for Pfizer. Mountaineers use it for this effect on the pulmonary circulation to combat altitude sickness. For someone already trained at altitude (or sleeping in al altitude tent, etc.) there would be no benefit. I can't quantify the benefit it would provide otherwise in a trained cyclist, but I imagine it would be fairly minimal to zero. Enough science, back to the pecker jokes........................ That's just what we need - a bunch of guys in Lycra with hardons. I guess it would make it easier to pick the dopers out of a line up. "You, over there, pup tent, yeah you. Go visit the vampires."
