Default Tyre-driven bells

A long time ago, I saw a reference to a tyre-driven bell.
Mounted (I think) to the bottom bracket, and activated
using a spare gear lever or whatever bit of string came
readily to hand.

Sadly, Google turns up very little, and I think my original
reference may have suggested they were discontinued
even at that point.

Does anyone know them? Remember them? Know of
a source for them other than scouring bike jumbles?
I just rather fancy trying one ...

Regards

John

I can confirm that yo are not dreaming. I distinctly remember a CTC
section invitation run when a newcomer to the group came along merrily
ringing his tyre driven bell for minutes at a time.
As I recall (and I'm going back to about 1970) it was front wheel
driven, and controlled by a string / spring combination.

I remember them - mounted to the front fork like a bottle dynamo, with
a bit of string leading to a trigger on the handlebars. It shouldn't
be too hard to make one from odds and ends.

Good sir, either your web travels are serendipitous for me,
or your Google mojo is significantly stronger than mine.

I have sent the undoubtedly nice people at Velo Classic an
email, am prepared to struggle with the German reluctance
to take credit cards or Paypal, and owe you a pint.

That looks a bit over-engineered compared to the ones I remember. :-)

I've bought a few small items from Germany and just sent cash in the
post without a problem.

Done that before - mostly no trouble at all, but once EUR70 'didn't
arrive' to an Ebay seller who I suspect would have been aggrieved
at how little the camera lens he was selling had made.

However, Heinz at Velo Classic takes Paypal, and responds first
thing in the morning to emails sent overnight. EUR5 for international
postage puts the bandits of Bridgwater into perspective.

More reports once I'm ringing my way merrily through the streets
of London.
