Did you get a picture of that guy on the army bike? I always enjoy watching the early starters, as they are an impressive bunch. It's one thing to be in great shape and ride fast in 14 hours, but something else entirely to be one of the early starters who finish in 30+ hours on sheer determination and toughness. That's a real demonstration of strength in my book. Thanks for standing out there in the wind! Joseph |

It's been held 42 times. A couple thousand riders do it each year. Joseph |

From some of the photos, I've gathered that 1) there's not a lot of need for sunscreen, 2) some of the terrain is desolate, and 3) some of the terrain is quite hilly. Seems like quite the epic event. What sort of times are the fastest finishers turning in? |

Are there other feats of strength and an aluminum pole? I've read your airing of grievances. =:O R |

Actually, since it is held on the weekend closest the longest day of the year, there can be quite a lot of sun (21+ hours). And since the sun is always to the south, it's in your face the whole time. So sunscreen is advised! But there is almost always some crap weather. Some of the terrain is rather desolate, but since it goes over a main road in those sections, there are lots of cars and truck which can be nerve wracking. Some of the terrain is hilly, particularly near the end. The main highpoint is only 1000 m at km 170 or so, and isn't very steep but it is still difficult. 13 hours, 28 minutes is the record time. That's 40 km/h average. 24.9 mph. Aerobars are not allowed. About 1800 riders for the full distance this year. My 17:43 was good for 454th place. Joseph |
