It's been awhile since I've posted on CF!
I'm a fairly avid cyclist. I commute regularly and ride recreationally on the weekends. I'd say that I average over 5K miles annually. I like to ride offroad and every year I enter a few local mountain bike races just for fun and to give myself some incentive to improve. I'm not super fast but I do okay. I always try to eat right and I hydrate really well leading up to a race. The races I do generally involve about 1 to 1 1/2 hours of fairly hard effort with spikes at the climbs. I'm wondering if there is some type of supplement that I can take that will give me some kind of real boost on race day. This is something I've pondered for several years now. I really don't want to take something year round as I don't race much. Just on race day. Can anyone recommend anything that might work?

I like Musclenergy by Cytosport. It works, but you have to be careful. It will reduce your ability to feel lactic acid, which is great, but it may cause you to push a lot harder than you normally would. |

Have you tried carbo loading?

Well... I'm not really sure. Technically no I guess. I try to eat a healthy, carb-heavy meal the night before the race. Most of the races I do start at around 10:00am and I try to eat a healthy breakfast. But I usually get nervous and I've found that if I eat too much for breakfast I don't feel so well. How much carbohydrate should one try to consume before a race?

Is this a liquid sports drink that you consume before the ride?
