Lightbulb Trans Alp challenge

Lets say I'm kindof 34... and lets say I'm like, OK on the odd Karrimore trail (with a bit of wheezing)... and lets say I fancy doing the Trans Alp Challenge in 3 years... what kind of training routine should I be getting into now & what are the chance of someone who's only just been into biking for the last year being able to do it? Any pointers to training books/routines/intravenous drugs greatly appreciated.
many thanks: David
