Question can't swap out BB between two frames

I was trying to help out a friend today with his new Jamis Dakar XLT 2.0 frame. He wanted to swap out his BB-UN71 from his other mountain bike, but the threading didn't quite fit. Initially, the BB started going in fine (~3 mm) but then it got really tough to turn with still about 3/4 inch of thread left.

I checked a good deal online and the BB should have worked. The stock Dakar XLT 2.0 comes with the Shimano BB-ES71, 68 x 113mm -- which has the V2 Spline, but should have the same threads. I got the calipers out and measured and everything should have fit.

We spent a long time working with it and I am wondering if a new frame has to be tapped in some way for the new BB and only the first several mm are threaded.

Anyway -- we had a long and frustrating day -- anything to help would be great.

Thanks,

Tim

Yes -- I was threading it correctly. I tried both directions, but only tried with effort in the correct direction.

Thanks though,

Tim

hmm... what BB are you trying to get in there? I have put Race-Face BB's in before, and they were a little difficult. There are some tricks... Are you using alot of lube? What kind of lube are you using?

I was using a lot of lithium grease. I mentioned the BB above BB-UN72.

Thanks,

Tim
