Just purchased a 03 Specialized Hardrock (Manitou fork). For some bizarre reason, it doesn't coast very well on the flats (i.e., slows down alot compared to my old ride - a 10 yr old CroMo). I checked for brake shoes dragging on the rims, but this wasn't the problem. Any ideas?

Tyres or different road surface or drag in the rear hub or your perception.

Hmmm...I thought of some of these too. If it's the rear hub dragging, how would I check for this? I've taken the wheel off, but it seems "normal" |

Maybe your rear bearings are too tight. When you remove the rear wheel it may feel OK, but it should be precision adjusted to run smooth and not knock when the QR is tight. What type of hub is it? Some hubs have very tight seals that need some break-in time.

Thanks daveornee. It's an unsealed loose ball bearing. Do you think it could be the seals themselves? |

It is bearings and/or tires. Try precsion adjusting the cones under the load of your QR. If that doesn't make a difference then it is the additional rolling resistance of your tires on the surface involved.
