Default Heel pain AFTER running

Weird... went for a good run two days ago. Near the end of the run my left heel felt a bit bruised.
Got home. Did about an hour's work on the computer, then when I got up from the desk I discovered I
was crippled! Horrid pain in the left heel, sole area. I have been limping ever since! How
discouraging! Any ideas what has happened to me?

Sounds like it could be plantar fasciitis - esp. if stiffest in the morning. Here's a couple links
to get you started.

http://www.sportsinjurybulletin.com...r-Fasciitis.htm (I use the strengthening
exercises in the above link and some of the stretches. My problems tend to be AT where I've got most
of my links, but PF is very closely related cousin and the two are frequently treated together.)

http://www.drpribut.com/sports/heelhtm.htm

You might do a google search on the group for past discussions as well as web.

Plantar Fasciitis. It is tough to get rid of too, good luck.

PS: and of course the usual rolling / massaging of everything on the backs of your legs (hams,
calves) that Ozzie has posted on many times since they are all connected and may be involved
with the symptom of PF.

(not sure why I spaced this out last night - senility?)

I had a similar experience about 3 years ago and it took about 9 months to get over it.

What fixed me up was getting some shoe inserts that were a kind of horseshoe shape around the heel.
(The brand name escapes me right now)

If I had tried these immediately, I'm sure I'd have recovered in about half that time. They are
really great _for me_.

Thanks for al the feedback folks. I have researched more on PF and am coming to the reluctant
(kicking & screaming) conclusion that you are right! PF seems to fit, and the prospects are very
depressing: I just finished a couple of phases of not running too due to some other surgery and
before that a different muscle pull. Rats! At least this time it is fall and winter coming up...
"off season," though I am usually a year-round runner. Rats!

Well if you can kick and scream you should be able to run. You must be faking it.

Don't be such a pessimist. I've dealt with it a couple times and it didn't slow me down, I never
missed a run. I'm not saying it isn't painful but for Heaven's sake, deal with it. The last time
around I filled an empty two liter coke bottle with water and kept it frozen in the freezer (natural
place). I would take it out and roll it under my foot, holding it on the heel area for a little bit
and then roll it back and forth some more keeping this up for about ten minutes. I did that four or
five times a day and it really seemed to help it clear up faster. At any rate some of these people
make it sound like the end of the world, its a minor discomfort, don't blow it up into a big deal.

Or maybe the pain of the kicking is why I'm screaming! ;-)

Don't let people here diagnose you. I've had planters fasciitis, but I've also (and currently) have
partially torn a the planter's ligament. I'm out of running till it heals. You can run through
planters fasciitis, but not through a ligament tear.

F*** the symptoms, I went to my podiatrist, who used a sonar unit and could see the partial tear in
the planter ligament. He measured and photographed it. See a professional, don't get diagnosed from
a newsgroup.

As far as general advise for plants fasciitis, stretch that tendon every chance you get.

This brings up one of the most amusing aspects of this NG. One person says "I have knee pain" and
10 people will jump in and tell you it's "PF" or TS" or whichever thread is most popular that week.
I wholeheartedly agree, diagnosis's from this NG are almost never correct (as evidenced by the
second weeks posts of "I went to a MD, and it's not PF")

Just for the sake of vocabulary it's "Plantar" Fasciitis. Plantar is
sole of the foot and planter is plants or growing a new colony.

When the PF is at the inflammation stage I would NOT stretch at every chance. Easy calf stretch, a
night splint, and taping to allow the tendon to heal. Active stretching of the fascia while inflamed
will do more harm.

A post running stretching program to include the sole is a healthy preventative action.

That's what happens when you're not careful enough with spell check programs.

The cause of planter Fasciitis is too tight a tendon.

Spell check misses many of these medical terms.

If this is a statement then I would suggest you do some homework. Take a gander at
http://www.drpribut.com/sports/heelhtm.html or http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0180.htm
