Crank rubbing against bike

ok.

i got a new crank for christmas. I put it on today, and the inside granny ring is rubbing. also, the outside chainring is rubbing against the chainstay. this is really aggravating me.

it seems as if there is a missing spacer between the BB and the crank.

someone please help. I am so desperate.

You have to match the crankset to the proper spindle length.It would appear you used the old improper BB.

ah crap. i ordered the new one to fit this crank from performancebike.com

they said it would fit. grrrrr. i will contact them.

I hate Performance. Screwed me on some road pedals. And their customer "service" staff don't seem to know jack about their inventory. Guess this should go in the "my bloody soapbox" category.

I don't think performance is at fault. Its not the vendors responsibility to know every single possible BB crank and frame combination there is. Contact your frame maker and ask what the proper spindle size is for the frame.

It's true that you should know what spec. BB your getting before you go installing it, and Performance does carry some quality stuff. However, for parts, I take my business to Nashbar.com. Where Performance carries the latest stuff, Nashbar does the same, plus you can outfit/replace parts on older bikes. For example, you can get a 7-speed cassette (Shimano-compatible) for ~US$10. Also, most of their parts are spec'd on the webpage w/ tech. info and part weight.

Well, seattube diameter has a little bit to do with it, but cranks have specific spindle length recommendations. The frame maker could tell hiin nothing other than seattube diameter, threading and shell width.

the width of the spindle that i have on the BB is 113. does this mean i need 118?

The BB fits perfectly into the housing, but the spindle does not stick out far enough. so perhaps i just need to move up a size in width.

Spindle length choices are listed as 113 or 118. Another thing to check is the BB shell width on the frame. It could be either 68 or 73mm. You have to measure it.

Thats why I say its better to contact the manufacturer directly. Their tech support should be able to tell you what combination is required with which crankset. There are so many possibilities that its impossible for a vendor to know them all, especially if its a rare combination or size.

I think I see what part of the problem might be. If you are using one of the new LX cranks they sit much deeper in the BB than the older ones. The new BB has a longer spindle on the drive side to accomodate the cranks. You might have actually been sold the older model BB or you actually need the next largest size. What is the exact model number of the cranks and BB?

The BB is a Shimano BB-ES71 cartridge, and the crank is an M572 Deore LX.

Will i need a special BB with an extra long drive side, but a normal left side for this crank, due to it's odd shape?
