How much faster is a very expensive road bike compared to a cheap $500 machine? By the way I am from England were money is measured in the units you measure weights in, so I am guessing that a cheap road bike is about £300 which, another guess, is $500.

Well doesn't that depend on what you expect regarding performance? If you are just driving to work is a BMW worth 30 grand more than a Ford? It is if you expect people to respond to your car or you just love the ride. However, both do the basic job of getting you to work. There is a bit of snob effect and there is a bit of improved performance as well with greater cost. Seems like the scale of diminishing returns is alive and well.
