Excersise biking. Does it help?

I have been cycling only around a month or so. I am also a member in a fitness centre. I usually cycle 30k 2-3 times a week. never tried any interval training. but it is my intention,
Anyhow I went to the gym and hopped on the bike for the first time and started doing 1min max 2min 1/2 max for about 7 times. Is this any use? Am i wasteing my time?
