I don't do night riding very often (not counting commutes through the city)
but I do enjoy it. Two particular memories: around this time last year,
went out late Saturday afternoon to the lanes around Delamere. As it was
going dark there was ground mist, about two foot high off the road. Dark
and misty, I nearly hit a black object in the middle of the road. On closer
inspection it was a cat curled up asleep. Good luck? Next day I had my
first "real" crash and put a hole in my new leggings.

Second was a few weeks later, riding back home from my sisters house, half
ten at night, 18 miles. Clear sky, full moon, saw about three cars during
the ride. Fantastic.

Was the morning (not early, about 9:15) the road that is one big
traffic jam (due to commuters) up till 9:00 was totally deserted
so I bombed along it in a post holocaust stylee. This was on the
A703 into Edinburgh (Balerno to the Kirknewton turn off).
Have been caught a few times in twilight but have never
deliberately rode in the dark. Have found the few times that
I have got caught out that I become quite insular riding in the
dark so that even though it takes slightly longer it seems less
like hard work, and you can't see things in the periphery of
your vision so they don't scare you.
