Cycle America

Hi Fellow cyclists,

I am planning to do a cycle ride from the west coast of USA to the east coast over the coming year. I have researched the routes and there is either the northern tier route or the trans america route, both around 4200 miles long and I believe are over different terrain- the trans america is crier but the northern tier is tougher with the hills. Dloes anyone have any knowlege of both routes? I have looked on adventure cycling.com and it gives no details on whether these two routes are road routes or they are cross country routes.

I have been advised to tour america during the summer- even though its drier its more safe than winter because of the bad snow/colder climates in the hills. I am trying to get some corporate sponsorship at the moment to fund this, if anyone can help me out with this too I would be greatful.

A friend of mine and I are going to cycle across the country as well in March. I would strongly recommend that you not try to do it in the summer. The Sonoran Desert is pretty unforgiving in the summer. I live in Phoenix and it is not at all uncommon that the temperatures reach 115+. Consequently, Phoenix gets over 100 days per year of +100 degree temperatures so I would recommend that you think seriously about making that trek at that time of year. The reason we are leaving in March is because it won't be too hot to cross the Sonoran and it won't be too cold by the time we get to the east coast because it will be April by the time we get there.

Wrong area, Rob, you can not doe either the Northern tier or the Transam in the winter, summer only. The people at Adventure cycling are very friendly, if you email them your questions, they will respond.

I did the Transam from east to west (I think the better direction) so I can help you with that route. Both routes are all on the road, maybe a tiny bit of gravel, but no big deal. It's a long way across, can't hide from the rain, so don't let that decide anything for you.
