do Dugast's make as much difference as everyone say's, how much difference do you reckon they would make over a Conti Tempo 19?

In 36 years of racing track, I have used almost every tyre known to man (not really, but it does seem that way at times), I haven't used Veloflex, but I have been told that they are nearly as quick as the dugasts (by someone who has used both). The cotton dugasts would have to be as quick as the quickest Vittoria I have used and quicker than any Conti I have used, including the tempo, sondeklasse and the 19mm Olympic. The silk dugasts are even quicker than the cottons. Conti's main problem appears to be the use of butyl tubes instead of latex. So in order of lowest rolling resistance to highest, Dugast would be 1st, Veloflex and the new Vittoria Pista would be equal 2nd, then the rest are a bit of a toss up. You must also remember that this is a personal opinion (from years of using the various brands) and there can always be differing opinions. I achieved a pb in the masters div3 500m tt State title (2004) after only 6 weeks training, I did this on the pink dugasts (unbelievably quick).

When I first read your message I didn't let it sink in that you were asking "how much difference" over the conti Tempo. My apologies for being a bit vague in my dottering old age. It is hard to say, but I would guess that they could make 0.5 sec over 500m, maybe more. Then, because of the reduced fatigue resulting from lower rolling resistance, the improvement may be more than double over 1000m.

No Way....Golds are more than 1 sec quicker than tempo's over 500m, if your pinks are as quick as I hear your .5 is WAY low.

For me (Remember this guy uses Clinchers) Veloflex are damn fast. But the fastest Clincher will never touch a good tubuler. I seen a guy earlier recomend Conti Sprinters for basic track...my opinion they are THE slowest bloody tyre ever invented...I make my riders use them to do their base miles on because they are SO damn dead (Bulletproof though)

I use Supersonics on an indoor 50 degree plywood banking and I didn't sand them off when they were new and they have never slipped on me - not even at 20kph on that 50 degrees.

Years back the tyre to use was the Clement #1 seta. Awesome tyre - they did a white version but they had to be used on a near perfect track as they would only last a kilo otherwise. Big bag tyres like the Sonderklasse are good sprinters tyres - the bigger bag being more suited to the slow tempo when up high on the banking.
For the nationals etc I used to use either Vittoria Piste or Soyos for the Kilo - Vittorias @ 200psi on rear disc and Soyo on front. For club racing there was a Continental tyre - the name escapes me - 21ml or thereabouts and lasted for ever. Not the lightest - but hey, nice to get a lift when you put the good wheels and tyres on. Over time you build up a collection of tyres - Wolber Pistes were good for all round track use, Clement silks were super fast but prone to tread delaminating and cuts (we're talking ashphalt or concrete tracks) and if the track was a rough one (like Noumea in 93 for the 6 day) a pair of well worn (but not cut) road silks/cottons were awesome. A few extra gms but reliable as hell.

Im almost envious hearing of these new tyres the top guys are using nowadays - almost makes me want to dust off the old white patent leather Duegi wooden sole track shoes (yeah - they are still the best on my book for sprint/kilo) and the columbus Max track frame with steel bars

Had my front wheel wrench sideways on my during a sprint in a banking at full throttle. the tires are so slippery I didn't even lose my line on the track following the guys. Kinda scary.
I just glued on conti podiums. Did I mess up?

If you are riding at a asphalt or concrete velodrome - Florida or T-Town from your other posts, you can use anything and you are not going to slip.

I have another prob. I recently bought a set of track wheels with a powertap. Tubulars with the podiums as mentioned. I have never used tubulars before and had my bike shop glue them on. Power #s seem the same as the PT on my road bike. Problem. I have a nice dead flat road that I use for sprints. The road bike with 175 cranks and 80.8" gear top speed in that gear is 37.5@ 156 rpm....Jump from about 27 mph . Same conditions with the track bike with new wheels, jump from about same speed. Top speed and cadence however are 34.5 141 rpm from a 165(just changed from 170) cranks and 46x15 =81" I expected 40mph and about 165 rpm. Both tests were only a few weeks apart under similar conditions I noticed that the rear tire has some very noticable high and low spots. Is that the problem, and does that go away as the tire gets some use? Thanks BP (Sorry for the personal perf data)
