I doubt you/we will make the slightest difference if we all voted for the
same cyclist.
Kelly Holmes will win it easily.Matthew Pinsent may be 2nd,and,strange but
probably true, I think Rooney will get 3rd, and the Mens sprint
relay team(100m running) will be team winners.
Cycling will get an honourable mention.
They are all worthy, though I think Rooney may be a little elevated above
his true worth.

But getting a cyclist into the final program would be good for the sport.

So, name some that are household names (we'll worry about whether they have
a personality afterwards - doesn't seem to matter for most sportspeople
anyway)
I'll start....
Chris Broadman. Retired.
Some woman cyclist. Went to the Olympics, didn't win anything.
Bradley someone? Went to the Olympics, might have won something.
I don't follow cycle racing, and it's not a mainstream sport. I've already
got the flameproof coat on, but you should realise that my list is going to
be very similar to 99% of the people who vote.... so it will be a runner, a
footballer and a rower, with a wildcard of a young boxer. Cycling will get a
mention in despatches, but nothing else.

And your nominations are ?????
Seriously, which cyclists has hit big-time this year? Have any grabbed the
headlines other than for not doing what they thought they might?
Unfortunately, unless one follows cycling passionately, it appears that
cycling is a big no-no to the general public.

Er... there was that bloke from the States. Lance someone-or-other.
Apparently set a world record. Don't know how many people would know
that though.

A lot of people who watched the olympics became more aware of cycling,
simply because we did quite well. I think that this year is probably
better than most to try and get a cyclist into the nominations.

Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins won gold medals at the Olympics.
I think Kelly Holmes will win this time round. Although if there's
some token "non Brit" category, then Lance's historic acheivement
deserves a mention. |

err .. BBC sports personality .. UK based isn't it ?

I know, you know, and maybe many cyclists know we did well at the olympics,
but are you seriously suggesting that, for instance, Bradley Wiggins is a
'sports personality' ?

I know that, you know it and many cyclists and probably a few non-cyclists
know it, but do you seriously suggest that winning a gold medal at the
Olympics is reason to be nominated for 'Sports Personality of the Year' ?

BBC spoty, I don't really watch it, but I'd guess it's UK based .. though I
could stand correcting if I'm wrong.

Kelly Holmes will win by a mile. It's then between Matthew Pinsent and
Amir Khan for the places. There have been no exceptional football
performances this year, as England were only OK in the European
championships. Rooney only stood out as he was new on the scene, so
perhaps the Sun readers will vote for him.
I think that Ben Ainsley (the sailor at the Olympics) deserves a
shout, but he also is in a minority event, so will get no more than a
mention.
Try looking at the list of past NON-winners on the BBC site. Some are
quite surprising when you put what they did into context with
hindsight. Did you know that Roger Bannister didn't win, not even in
the year he did the four minute mile?
>>
>> Seriously, which cyclists has hit big-time this year?
Sorry, but apart from the track cyclists (that velodrome for the
Commonwealth games must be paying dividends) individual UK cyclists
had a poor time if we're honest, becuase the only thing that matters
is what they did at the Olympics. Nicole Cooke got quite a bit of
coverage for her Olympic event on the BBC, with a fair build-up as it
was before the athletics had started, but she had a fairly poor
result. David Millar - vanished from sight in the media after being
banned for taking EPO, so he won't get mentioned at all.
> Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins won gold medals at the Olympics.
I wouldn't be surprised if the men's cycling team gets a placing in
the team award, but the men's Olympic 4x100m sprint team is surely a
shoe-in for this, as they managed to beat the Americans, who _never_
lose this event. This was a major upset when it happened, as much as
the US Basketball team doing so poorly at the Olympics.

There is an international personality award, not voted for by the
public I think. It will be a toss-up between two nominees, Lance
Armstrong and Michael Schumacher. Armstrong's exploits are well-known
in this group, but last season, Schumacher won the Formula 1
championship for the seventh time, more than anyone else has ever
managed. It seems fairest to me that they should share the award, as
it seems a shame that since such achievements coincide, one has to be
picked over the other. Still, it's only an award - it's not as if it
means anything.

Bradley Wiggins is actually mentioned on the nomination page as a
contender. Though it'll go to Kelly Holmes anyway.

There is an Overseas Personality category which would be ideal for lance
but there is no indication of a nomination process for that.
Incidentally, if you want to recreate Lance's win on your turbo trainer
and send it to the BBC you might get your pic published... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/funn...me/4007541.stm
