Kid on BMX does some fairly outrageous stunt, fails, and dies. Injuries mentioned, but never described as head injuries. |

Some callous bastard then went & told the parents that if only he'd been wearing a helmet he would have lived - an assertions which is, as well all know by now, absolutely not supportable in the light of the available evidence. Classic shroud-waviong piece featuring that well known cyclist David Coulthard. He says that he thinks nothing of wearing a helmet when racing. Good for him. Does he support the mandatory use of full-face helmets and Nomex suits by all drivers to combat motor vehicle fatalities? After all, they outnumber child cyclist fatalities 100 to 1. -- Guy === May contain traces of irony. MSeries wrote: > "Learn why this family wants compulsory helmets for > children" This story was about a local girl who at the age of 9 (four years ago) went out on her bicycle. She usually wore a helmet but this particular day she didn't, due to peer pressure and was in collision with a motorcycle. She suffered brain damage. Her mother now wants mandatory helmets for under 16s, she thinks that parents will have an easier time persuading children to use helmets if it is the law. The report ended by showing the girl pretty soon after her accident and the reporter said "of course it is up for debate as to whether a helmet would have prevented this" - or something to that effect. It mentioned that lots of local MPs want compulsory helmets for children too. |

Most can be spotted pootling around the paddock on bikes during the GP weekends. Alain Prost was well known as a competitive cuclist. The proportion of top drivers who are regular cyclists is probably higher than that of the fans. ..d |

Eric Martlew & cronies (Carlisle being in the Newcastle coverage area) Sob story of a teenager who had a bike accident (involving a car? I can't remember now), anyway suffered brain damage, now has epilepsy & requires constant supervision. David Coultard wheeled out in support of the Bill, "we wear crash helmets on scooters at 25-30mph, therefore must be good for the kids". Brief appearance by a local CTC saying about where helmets have been made compulsory, cycle use has fallen, accidents not fallen anymore than the fall in cycle use. Very short compared to the air time given to the kid above. Email comments invited to look dot north dot comment at bbc dot co dot uk. -- Steve |

Particularly as it was described as 'a small injury to the *face*'. It's unpleasant to have to mention it, but I can't see the logic in that at all. A |

That's only about £25, but it's enough to make me comply, despite how pointless it is for me. Still, it keeps a bit of the rain off, gives me somewhere to put a light and mirror and, in an emergency, I can clobber a clueless cager with it. It sucks big-time in the heat, though. -- Matt K Dunedin, NZ |

Dunno, but it looks as if the Beeb have been caught unawares; from discussions with people who have spoken to the journo concerned the material they were sent apparently did not mention either Coulthard's interest in the Facesaver or his connection with BHIT and through them Martlew. -- Guy === May contain traces of irony.
