Are there any others out there that plan there trip using a PC mapping system that can be transferred to a handheld GPS. We are new to taking to our mountain bikes but we do look at the OS maps before hand and try to plan a little. We take our GPS with us ( attached to the handle bars) and keep a record of where we have been. The resulting track is transferred to our OS map on the computer and including waypoints can be shared with others. I use OziExplorer as my PC mapping software and my GPS is a little dated Magellan 315. If anyone is wanting some advice on using the GPS on cycle rides then I shall be pleased in my limited capacity to help. It is good fun and after all that is what getting out is about. Enjoy your next picnic lunch, weather permitting we shall be out tomorrow. -- Remove NOSPAM from address to send me email. ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! >100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Yep, I've been doing so for about 5 years, the GPS is the best cycling accessorie that I've ever bought. My GPS is getting a bit old now, it's a Garmin GPS 12. I use this software www.gartrip.de which will import maps, e.g. scanned OS maps can be used, or, digital maps. I tend to plan the routes on rainy days / dark evenings, and have some ready to download to the GPS on sunny weekend. I also keep all my tracks so I can load them all in to the GPS software at once to see where I've been, or, more significantly which roads I've not used, so I can then plan new routes to include roads I've not cycled on before. If anyone is visiting Somerset and would like some GPS routes (mostly 20 to 40 miles) post back here with your e-mail address. -- Best Regards Dave |

Nice to know there are people using a GPS. I have a Magellan 315 and use OziExplorer as the software on my pc for generating tracks and storing tracks. I use the OS maps in OZI and I find it very very good. Not into big mileage yet but plan do build things up. I cycle in the East Lothian area so any help let me know.
