Default Lakelander 3000

Does anyone know much about this challenge?

Basically, it's where you have to do Scafell, Scafell Pike,
Skiddaw and Helvellyn in 24 hours. I'm planning on doing
this in June or July and was wandering if anyone had done
it before.

Any ideas on routes, etc.?

Thanks

Presumably because you left your GPS, camera, walking poles
or map on one of those peaks but can't remember which one?

Because it's a challenge, and it's there.

Does anyone have any advice?

My advice: Be very quiet as you go past anybody's home in
the middle of the night - specially in Wasdale. They get
enough disturbance from the people doing the Three Peak
Motorway Dash.

Will - it has been done many times before. Indeed it is a
fell race. Why add to the erosion - create your own
challenge - be original.

ISTR that the Ramblers have an organised event every year
but don't know the date so you could find yourself one of a
very large crowd.

It is a closed loop walk traditionally starting and
finishing in Keswick (Moot Hall?). I think the closed loop
idea is silly as it results in a long road walking leg but
that is the par of the challenge. I bent the rules to start
and finish at Seathwaite thus leaving the worst of the road
walking till last.

> Any ideas on routes, etc.?

The easiest route is fairly obvious.

Starting at Keswick.

By road to Seathwaite and then Sty Head and the Corridor
Route to Mickledore.

Choice of route at Mickledore depending on whether you are a
rock climber (Broadstand), a risk taker (Lords Rake) or a
cautious walker (Foxes Tarn path). To Scafell and return by
the same route.

Then Scafell Pike, Esk Pike and Angle Tarn.

From Angle Tarn take the contouring path round the flank of
Rossett Pike, over High White Stones (should be possible to
avoid the summit), down Wythburn to Wythburn and so to
Helvellyn.

Take a suitable route back to the main road and then by road
to Keswick and the usual walking route up and down Skiddaw
and finish back at the start point.

IIRC 45 miles and 10000 feet of ascent. A support party is a
help but not essential is doing it on your own. Some 30
years since I did it so details a bit hazy but by now there
should be a deep groove all the way round. :-)

It would be a much better walk if the road walking could be
avoided but avoiding the road would substantially increase
the difficulty. It is not a great stretch from that to the
Bob Graham Round which, although theoretically walkable in
24 hours, is really the province of Fell Runners.

Not heard of that, but the Bob Graham is the one to go for
if you want a challenge

I think if I lived in one of those villages I'd buy a
'Stinger' like the p*l*c* use to stop stolen cars in car
chases. :-)

Hmm.. I've heard of that one before, but I was hoping to do
a challenge that is actually possible - that Bob Graham
round sounds like just plain madness. As far as I know, it's
more for fell runners, and I'm not quite that daft ("see you
in a bit, just going to run up this mountain"!).

Thanks for all the tips anyway - I might tell you all how it
went in a few months.

Bob Graham Round in one day = incredibly hard in two days =
pretty hard in three days = pretty sensible challenge walk.

to their standards.

Yes, several bits of advice.

a. Learn to post interleaved.

b. Get some better reasons for doing stuff like this.

c. Even better, get your own reasons to do your own stuff.

Apologies to everyone for not fixing the top-posting. Too
much Easter chocolate.

Correct me if I am wrong. Is this a walking group? Did the
poster post a question about walking? Why all the
negativity?

Yes.

Yes.

Because the 'professionals' in the NG are above the sort of
challenge mentioned. Try not to worry about it, but get your
asbestos suit ready for the inevitable hot air that's
forecast for any minute now...
