Hmm, never had any decompose on me, the worst it does is set rock-hard if the packets been open for a while. I find it hard to buy around here, so stock up on it when ever I can. Mind you, I've found that mint gives me wind, so don't eat as much of the stuff as I used to :-( What brands of Kendal Mint Cake to people prefer? I will only buy Romney's, everything else just tastes like peppermint creams. I can't be doing with the chocolate covered stuff either. -- +----------------------------------------+------------------ ---------------+ | Andrew Conroy, Owl-Art Un-Ltd. | email: | a.m.conroy@argonet.co.uk | Coming to you on an Acorn | RiscPC SA110 | Snail: 58 Newland Road, | | | Worthing, | | | +----------------------------------------+------------ ---------------------+ The impossible I can do at once, miracles take a little longer!! |

I used to like it but I don't think I have had any since I moved on to Mars bars in the late 60s. I don't recall any Mint Cake decomposing but I regularly threw away Mars bars that had suffered for too long in the rucksack. -- Roger Chapman so far this year 27 summits New - 16 (Marilyns 4, Sweats 1, Outlying Fells 11) Repeats - 11( Marilyns 2, Sweats 6, Wainwrights 11) Knackered knee - 3 times |

I remember seeing the clean and neatly opened wrapper the next morning. He unwrapped it all, except the mustard, which had a rather large tooth mark in the side of the plastic bottle, and plenty of remaining yellow stuff. It obviously didn't go with the mint cake. |

Chris Malcolm <cam@holyrood.ed.ac.uk> wrote >Hands up anyone who has actually eaten more of the stuff >than they've had decompose on them? > Not I.... It seemed to be the 'stuff to carry' in the 70's to provide energy, but I had to be badly depleted to eat it, because it was so damn sickly sweet. My teeth start hurting at the thought of it. I carry fruit and cereal bars nowadays, and for that weak and faint feeling I always have a pack of Dextrose sweets, which I find are the best thing for a quick recovery. One sweet given to a horse will also ensure its close company until you leave the field. ;-) -- Gordon |

As a kid I loved the stuff, it's now filed alongside Coke in the "what /was/ I thinking?" bin. Haven't bought any since I realised it was completely bogging, so not had it decompose, so technically fall into a "hands up" here. The chocolate covered ones are OK but you can't beat the good ol' original. I have a Mars Bar which has no writing left on the wrapper and which is completely flat and stuck to the paper. I can't check the best before date (because it wore off) and it would be a real pain to eat. I hate getting sticky hands! Actually, I think I may have thrown it away a couple of months ago. I was sick of seeing it everytime I packed my rucksack. I don't think any emergency would have made me eat the horrible old thing - but perhaps that's the point of emergency rations..... no good if they're the first thing you eat! Judith |

Roger wrote: Chris Malcolm wrote: >> Hands up anyone who has actually eaten more of the stuff >> than they've had decompose on them? I think I only ever bought it twice. IIRC the first one lasted quite a while, but I never finished the second one. Stayed in my rucksack a very long time before I threw it away. Or maybe there was only one, can't remember now. > I used to like it but I don't think I have had any since I > moved on to Mars bars in the late 60s. Yes, that's what I did too. Far more palatable, although I was never a fan of Mars bars, one of my least favourite chocolates. Only bought them for the high calorific value (330) after reading that they were the most calorie filled chocolate you could buy. > Hands up anyone who has actually eaten more of the stuff > than they've had decompose on them? Mistakenly bought some of the brown sugar type while in Keswick a couple of weekends ago, the Bank Holiday weekend. On my way merrily to Pillar via Black Sail Pass on the Saturday, I decided to have some before going up to the Pass. It was a rather warm day, and the heat of the body had liquefied the stuff. Gooey horrible mess in the packet which I could only 'suck' from the paper. I often carry my mint cake in a poly sandwich bag, but this time I forgot. Didn't even like the brownsugar flavoured either. Anyway, bought some chocolate covered ones (my favourite) on my return that evening to take with me on the High Stile route via Scales Force on the Sunday. Same hot day, lots of heat from the body ....... but the mint cake remained solid. Not even the chocolate melted! So, go for the chocolate coated version for all round summer use, I say. -- Sandy Saunders @ www.thewalkzone.co.uk "Mountains or Mole Hills ..... reaching the summit still brings the same excitement" |

The opened packet on my desk says DEXTRO ENERGY by Unilever. You can get them from most chemists. I like the tropical fruits flavour but there's also orange, lemon, blackcurrant or 'original'. They are good for refreshing a dry mouth if you are low on water. -- Gordon |
