Recently it was announced on the news that the MOD have opened up their military ranges at Mynydd Epynt. This would provide walkers with miles/Km of new walking space. I've also heard that this is NOT the case but limited access has been granted from the car park at SN 9644 467 for a few hundred metres. Anyone out there with real information please? -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |

I suppose we must have such areas for our lads to play soldiers though. The walks to which they refer seem very well defined, and walkers do not appear to be welcome away from the directed routes. Still we must be thankful for small mercies. As for being a worthwhile trip from Swansea, well I know the Beacons panorama is very extensive taking in the Black Mountains/Beacons/and the Western fans all in one go. Thanks again. -- Bill Grey http://www.billboy.co.uk |

There was a tv news report of the opening up of part of the Epynt, I think it said about a 7 miles length with more to follow. I believe most of what is planned to be open will be on the edge of the range linking up to existing rights of way that lead on to the range, hence creating circular walks. Powys County Council are advertising for a Epynt Way Officer, to be based at the Sennybridge Army Camp. The idea is to create a 50 mile Eppynt way. Derek Cosslett "W. D. BTW some of Eppynt is "open" and gives good walking. I enjoyed a pleasant round of Moelfre and Pen y Celyn this summer. Albeit to the sound of machine gun fire. http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap...246500&A=Y&Z=4 Richard Webb |
