Default Mynydd Eppynt the truth please!

Recently it was announced on the news that the MOD have opened up their military ranges at Mynydd
Epynt. This would provide walkers with miles/Km of new walking space.

I've also heard that this is NOT the case but limited access has been granted from the car park at
SN 9644 467 for a few hundred metres.

Anyone out there with real information please?

There is nothing on the defence estates website about it but you may be able to dig up a contact
number that can help

Thanks very much Gwyn,

The area has always intrigued me, and I've often though - what a waste ! I suppose we must have such
areas for our lads to play soldiers though.

The walks to which they refer seem very well defined, and walkers do not appear to be welcome away
from the directed routes. Still we must be thankful for small mercies.

As for being a worthwhile trip from Swansea, well I know the Beacons panorama is very extensive
taking in the Black Mountains/Beacons/and the Western fans all in one go.

Thanks again.

Ah! I didn't realise it was in Sennybridge, so it is on the defence estates site after all!

I asked Charlie, in case he knew anyone involved with the MoD; however it seems that they keep
themselves to themselves and he has no contacts therein. I'll ask my friends over at Brynamman if
they've heard anything, and will report back.

Think this is what you are referring to Bill.

Reasonable walk, begrudgingly opened up by the military, some nice views into the Beacons in the
distance. Whether its worth the trip from Swansea is another matter.

As far as I know this is the only bit of Eppynt open to walkers, and this walk has plenty of bits of military
equipment (discharged flare cases, flare parachutes, spent bullet cases etc) lying around.

There was a tv news report of the opening up of part of the Epynt, I think it said about a 7 miles
length with more to follow. I believe most of what is planned to be open will be on the edge of the
range linking up to existing rights of way that lead on to the range, hence creating circular walks.

Powys County Council are advertising for a Epynt Way Officer, to be based at the Sennybridge Army
Camp. The idea is to create a 50 mile Eppynt way.

Could be - I remember Rhyl Oil telling me he'd bagged it a couple of years ago . A quick dash from
the car was all that was required. :-)

BTW where is Roy these days?

Look closely for the cord used to tighten your boots and I think you might find an answer
to that ;-)

Does this mean the end of the Marilyn Bagger's sprint championship. Mynydd Eppynt from the
road ASAP.

BTW some of Eppynt is "open" and gives good walking. I enjoyed a pleasant round of Moelfre and Pen y
Celyn this summer. Albeit to the sound of machine gun fire.

My contact is keeping his ears open, but so far hasn't heard anything beyond the conflicting reports
everyone else seems to have seen.
