Rep Power: 12 | | Re: Xes - Message Board its dec the 5th here in france, and all over the country there are organised doos for charity its called the TELETHON, well the local racing club in my town, "team club boulou", organised a ride around the luvvely countyside we have here. i was a bit worried because i am riding mi old winter bike, sloping top tubed pennine, 38x42 rings and a 11x32 block, plus some wired ons (not clinchers damm it ) which i bought from the local Elercq, they are made in vietnam, nylon, brown and can only be blown up to 5 bars whatever that means. oh i must let you know that they are the same tyres that i rode 22 kms flat on, if they are good enough to survive viet-con/usa land mines they should be good for backwater france.. but sod it i said lets keep on it and leave the carbon rottwieller in the garage.. we met up at the local marie, and after a bit of poncing about 55 of us set off.we rode 30ks then we came to this 6 kms col, not too bad average about 1 in 12, all the way up, **** man the posers were out in style, carbon bikes, carbon wheels carbon helmets and burnt offerings for brains!!!!!. a bout 5 blokes attacked at the bottom, i sat on grumbling about **** 15 kilo push bikes to this 18 year old no hoper suffering beside me, after about 4 ks, 2 guys jumped at the front, i just slide past the so called carbon men and got this big guys wheel... the top has a false flat then it climbs for about 1 kms, but the road is crap, i some how found myself at the front of this carbon men group, strange, all's gone quiet, sod it i thuoght, i changed from 38 to 42 on the 15 sprocket and went. i kept going and saw the top, but where was everybody, only 3 guys were left.... the others, looking for a carbon seat clamp bolt to reduce weight no doubt. well why am i sayeing all this...at the top a carbon poser came up to me and said, quote, "its all right for you youngsters, you should have more respect for a rider like me, i am 42 years old ". a small wisper in his earhole informed him that he should have more respect for a 59 year old sod like me... bon courage.. ps anyone can do it, its called "MOTIVATION " period... |

Stick with the rollers. | knees, if you live on a housing estate you can 100 laps of the cresent, pop in the house say every 10 laps to see if all is ok and then do another 10 laps, time yourself at each 10 lap period and on the last 10 go like **** man.. you have done 50 miles within 100 yds of home,, ps beware of dogs/ vandals/ and insurance compensation seekers who step out in front of you and then claim you were " racing on the public highway ", or" riding a bicycle in a furious manner,".
i once got done for riding behind a coal wagon from skipton to steeton one early morning, it was my dawn patrol days ( out on bike 5.30 am to 7.30 am) try it, its great.. well i was pinging along behind this open coal wagon which was doing 45mph in a 30mph area. all of a sudden i heard a wail of a police siren behind, hell someone must be in trouble, but kept going..the next minute i was was being forced off the road by this huge volvo barge thingy,, he stoped me and the wagon,,, the driver of the wagon said that it was coal for the hospital boiler in steeton, he had to speed because they had run out..he got off with it, but the cops did me for riding furiously behind this wagon... the biggest problem was that it was raining and the coal dusthad been blowing off the back of the wagon,, i was totally black, they thuoght i was a west indian, but when i opened my mouth they saw i was white..... my wife mrs BRF was pissed off when i got home, she had to wash all my clothes....bon courage...ps its true.. if i have time i will tell you all about sitting behind a wagon which was delivering live hens to the slaughter house....now theres a tale |

Rep Power: 13 | | Re: Xes - Message Board I couldnt get out on the club ride today, so I went out myself on my own traning ride, left home at 8, i got one mile in and punctured, got the kit out, and discovered that the valves werent long enough, but kept trying, 50 minutes later I phoned home and got picked up. Later i went to the town and got some long valve inner tubes, I went home put one in, and ripped it on the rim, I am now repairing it....
Bad day for me really, anyway soon will be going bowling , anyway..... |

Rep Power: 12 | | Re: Xes - Message Board There is always the option of putting the tube in the saddle-bag and stuffing the cover with grass.
It's a job getting the tyre back on, and the ride is interesting to say the least - but it's got me home at least twice.
Between 1898 and 1904, **** Long used to contribute "The Wheeling World" in our local paper under the pseudonym of **** Turpin. It was a tantalising window onto the local Victorian and Edwardian world of club cycling.
In one article, **** talked about a ride when his chain had broken: to get home he removed the pedals, dropped the saddle and rode the machine like a hobby-horse.
I remember this about three weeks later. I was out on a night ride when the swaging on my 27/6d-at-Bill-Harvell's chainwheel finally gave way. Solution? Do as **** had done.
A 12-mile hilly ride on a hobby-horse gives you a new opinion of our cycling pioneers.

Bad day for me really, anyway soon will be going bowling , anyway..... | Take no notice of BRF, he's in a bloody good mood today after slogging the other 54 riders into submission in the Pyrenees. He'll be having a stiff 51 Pastis, and feeling pleased with himself, especially having beat them up riding his hack bike. So I raise my glass to him.
Seems you've had a ****ty day, they happen, but I query the wisdom of not taking an extra tube. It's easier to change than arsing about with puncture outfits, especially if it's raining. I remember that I was probably your age when I last used tyres and tubes, from then on it was tubulars only until the end. From learning all the time, for the life of me I can't see how anyone can possibly ride town crits. on clinchers as you call them and not kill yourself, or anyone else. You need fat round 13oz. tubs with less pressure in than normal, to get round the ever turning circuit. I'll give you a visual example. Watch motor bike racing, these days they ride tyres that are virtually round. You rode the track last week. You don't need side tread really, do you, the grip is on the track.
Well have a good game of bowling, get rid of the day with a bit of fun.

Did a 50 miles today.
First time back on my bike since 10th September 2004.
Why ?
Managed to catch a severe bronchial infection in Barcelona on the 18th September which completely ****ed me up.
I was in a terrible state - flu like symptoms for October and feeling shattered.
November was a slow improvement - had to resort to antibiotics to try to recover.
Today was only the third day back - great to be on the bike again : although
it took me 4 hours to do 50 miles (3hours 49mins to be exact). |

Anytime I had a chest infection, or indeed winter hacking in cold conditions, this what I did. No use sucking in frozen air into a hot body.

The best edition of this magazine this year - I say.
There is over 100 pages devoted to the great man and an excellent interview
with him at this years Dave Rayner Funds dinner.
Merckx has lost a lot of weight recently and this has led to questions about his health.
His only comment is "I've been told to look after myself, by my doctor".
Speculation has been rife in the cycling press but Merckx has refused to say anything more on the subject.
One very interesting comment he makes in his interview in the mag : he says that before his crash at Blois, he was a better cyclist (I think the crash happened after the Tour de France in 1969).
He broke his pelvis in that crash and EM always maintained that he was not as good a cyclist after that crash.
He went on to say that before the crash - he never ever felt tired when competing and this included racing a full season and destroying the field in his first Tour de France in 1969.
the mind boggles.
I strongly recommend that you get this magazine - it's well worth reading. | Je n'ai rien a dire, au sujet de.... Eddy, champion. Absoluement. Godefroot, Karstens et Bruyere, tut tut.
Peut etre je vais l'acheter.
