Armstrong to make a comeback

"Lance Armstrong is to come out of retirement and bid for an eighth Tour de France title, according to reports in Los Angeles last night. Armstrong, who will turn 37 next week, will join the Astana team and compete in five road races, sources in the United States said.

According to VeloNews, a website, Armstrong will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, the Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphiné-Libéré and the Tour de France, racing for no salary or bonuses and promising to post online his internally tested blood analysis.

Although some experts are sceptical about Armstrong's motives for announcing a comeback, saying that it is no more than a publicity stunt to advertise a feature on the rider in a magazine, in August he competed in his first significant event since 2005, finishing second in the Leadville Trail 100, in Colorado. “It's the first time in three years that I've done seven hours of cycling,” Armstrong said of the tough, single-day mountain-bike race.

Armstrong, who had testicular cancer diagnosed in 1996, won seven Tour de France titles from 1999 to 2005. Since his retirement, he has maintained his fitness and has run the New York City Marathon twice and the Boston Marathon."
