Lumens - the supposed holy grail of light measurement. Or is it just a number that sounds impressive in a product description? Im seeing a lot of lights claiming to be super bright with 1000, 2000, or even 3000 lumens, but what does that really mean in terms of actual visibility on the trail?
Is a 1000 lumen light truly twice as visible as a 500 lumen light, or is there some sort of diminishing returns at play? And what about beam pattern - does a light with a narrow, focused beam pattern actually provide better visibility than a light with a wider, more dispersed beam, even if they have the same lumen output?
Ive seen some lights that claim to have a more efficient beam pattern that allows them to achieve the same visibility as a higher-lumen light, but with less actual light output. Is this just marketing mumbo-jumbo, or is there actually some science behind it?
Whats the actual threshold for lumens when it comes to night riding - is 500 lumens sufficient for casual trail riding, or do you really need to be pushing 1000 lumens or more to see anything? And what about factors like color temperature and pulse width modulation - do they have any actual impact on visibility, or are they just added features to make the product more marketable?
Can anyone shed some light (pun intended) on what lumens actually mean in terms of real-world visibility, and how to separate the marketing hype from the actual performance?
