Schwinn 1500 floor pump with stuck plunger

I finally fixed it by unscrewing the main tube from the base, as suggested here. It wasn't easy to to do. There were two clamps,a large vice-grips ,and a convincer (rubber mallet) involved. By the way, this pump has no valve; it relies on the shape of the rubber piston to open and close the...

Schwinn 1500 floor pump with stuck plunger

Thanks. I just tried what you suggested, but I can't find a way to hold the valve open, or remove it (nor even see it for that matter). My next attempt will be to unscrew the main tube from the base again. It looks like it might be possible if I can apply enough torque. Vice grips and a...

Schwinn 1500 floor pump with stuck plunger

My beloved 20 year old, all steel construction, Schwinn 1500 floor pump has decided to choke itself on its rubber plunger. The plunger came clean off the rod and is lodged down at the bottom of the tube. I've not been able to dislodge it. I'm not impressed with most new floor pumps, and...

Crit strategies for an upward sloping power profile

Background: The (inevitable?) decline of my neuromuscular power over the years, plus recent heavy emphasis on FTP training, has transformed my power profile to one of an upward bent, from my previous "pursuiter" profile. A long time ago, way before power meters were around, I seemed to...

Openers for two race weekend: what would you do?

Thanks, Dave. That plan would give me a slightly negative TSB on both days, which seems about right. In the past month or so, this is when I have felt best -- and especially the day after doing a one minute all out test, interestingly enough. I used to think a gut wrenching effort like...

Openers for two race weekend: what would you do?

It's Monday, and I'm competing in a short uphill TT Saturday evening, and one, maybe two, 50 minute crits the following afternoon. My CTL is 77, TSB: -18. The TT will take less than 10 minutes to complete. I want to do my best both days, but especially for the crit. At 77 TSS/day, I'm...

    Training Peaks subscription?

I have WKO+ and I was just wondering if an online TP subscription would give me anything beyond what WKO already does. Any thoughts? If it's just a way to back up power files, then I already do that by other means. I also see it has a calendar for planning workouts, but I use a spreadsheet...

    Bike helmets are awesome!

This brings back memories -- or rather non-memories. I too once woke up in the middle of the road with strange people poking at me. Surreal to be sure. I had some strange dreams while laying there. I do remember that. Someone in the emergency room mentioned dogs hanging around the scene of...

    Are we there yet?

Southerners are always so deathly afraid of hidden ice patches (I know, I used to be one and was the same way). Your video has left me hankering for clear and dry roads again. It seems I remember a time when our roads looked like that. It was such a long time ago... Well, back to the...

    Are we there yet?

Jane, get me off this crazy thing!! (this is not me -- I just found it on You Tube) 3 x 17s on the rollers for me yesterday. I'm working up to 3 x 30s, or some variation of them. I'll be glad when I can do long rides outside again. It should only be 5 or 10 more weeks.

    Off Season training recomendations

I think you mean at a percentage, usually about 90%, of your 20 min. max. It would probably be impossible to do more than one maximum 20 minute effort in a session (care to try?). I've done that, plenty of times! At the end of the first interval I am totally trashed, but after about...

    Off Season training recomendations

I think you mean at a percentage, usually about 90%, of your 20 min. max. It would probably be impossible to do more than one maximum 20 minute effort in a session (care to try?). Without a power meter, the OP will have to gauge his effort by perceived exertion and his heart rate monitor; he...

    Chronic Fatigue? Over Training Syndrome?

I'm sorry if this was mentioned already -- I only quickly scanned this thread. There are many possible answers to the OP's question but one thing that he might want to check is his thyroid. Do you have low body temperature (below 97.5 or so)? That might be an indication of a thryoid issue...

    Sweat in Eyes

My buddies and I always called that taking a "squeegee break." My solution to the problem is a bit of old lycra/wicking material from a discarded jersey or something sewn into a thin headband. You can even be color-coordinated this way, which, of course, is the most important benefit.

Best place to find a junior-sized road bike

Can anybody suggest how I might find an inexpensive, very small road bike for a 4 ft. tall 10 year old? Something around 38 cm with 650B wheels would probably be ideal. Surely, there's some used ones out there somewhere?
