my hardtail sits in the garage right now with a totally locked rear brake. No reason for it to lock up, it just did while I wasn't riding it. I had similar problems on the dual sus bike. If I ever need to replace these brakes, it won't be with another Juicy or even an Avid hydraulic brake.

I use my garmin 810 (seems they have the turn by turn issues finally worked out two+ years after release) and map out everything beforehand but a crib sheet with turns on the stem works pretty well too.

you are not likely to damage anything by taking it for a test ride...but if you can not do your basic maintenance yourself at this point (you will learn in time), then it would not hurt to take it to your Trek dealer and have him give it a once over and a tune up. Change the tires, Keep the bike. Save the Knobbie tires in your storage area. You're only 33. You may want to take that puppy off road some day. All you have to do is put the knobbies back on and go. IMHO, hardtail mtbs make the best commuter bikes while offering more versatility than a hybrid...
