Beta Testers Wanted: Biking/Running Performance Monitoring

looks potentially interesting, especially if I upload the same course at two different time points to judge any gains. One thing I would suggest it that you support FIT file since I currently have to upload my data to one site as FIT, download as TCX, then upload it to this one. A little...

endurance training: hr or cadence emphasis

Thanks so much! That was a very clearly articulated response that even I could understand. The distinctions and benefits of each aspect of training are clearer to me now.

endurance training: hr or cadence emphasis

Sorry, my bad. I meant to say low HR or HIGH cadence. Going up these hills involves an increase in HR and lower cadence. If I focus on maintaining cadence the HR rises further and faster. If I focus on HR, my cadence drops lower than typical.

endurance training: hr or cadence emphasis

I agree that they go hand in hand. Unfortunately my local terrain means that I cannot do both. The hills are such that I can either target HR or cadence (2-300 ft of 7-11% or better), so keeping a low HR and a low cadence is sort of impossible.

endurance training: hr or cadence emphasis

So it begins again. This year I completed my first century (5 1/2 hours), got myself over a cat 2 and been riding with a group @~20mph. I'm starting to train for the same goals, only faster on all three elements. I'm starting with my endurance base. The program I'm working with uses both %Max HR...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

Swampy said Again, just for clarification, I'm certainly not claiming I'm screaming up TdF categorized climbs. I think I stated that the climbs were categorized according to whatever algorithm Map My Ride uses. I have no idea how the two compare. But, the motivation I got after leaving my...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

the Trimps idea actually sounds like something I would find useful. Just tracking HR is not going to be helpful since each training ride would be dialed into a target zone so I would not be able to see progress but this allow me to take into account the other kinds of rides I might do. Cool...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

thanks quenya, I did a personal TT during the TdF TT day this year of 8.2K in 13:35 and as I described it in my log: It took me twice as long to get back home after that effort. I felt like someone had turned me inside out and left me out to dry. Barely made it home . I can probably psych...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

Swampy, 1. Getting there. started @ 216 lbs and now @ 205. Still clydesdale but subClyde is my short-term goal 2. the message, everyone who has been kind enough to weigh in here, seems to be that 2 x 20s are a good approach so I'll definitely be adding these to my rides. However, I'm a...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

Thanks Calico and Tape, Both of you gave me info that I understood at a level I could understand it. I kind of knew that "strength endurance" was not the correct term but I hoped that the context and description of what I was experiencing would prompt a correction while still conveying what...

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

As a followup, two questions 1) I have a HRM but no Power meter so I've been gauging my effort by trying to stay in various HR zones on my rides so if I was to do 2 x 20s should I be using 90% MHR as a goal? Also, my area is mainly rolling terrain (few flats and lots of short 5-12% hills...

Thanks. While I've been cycling a few years I still consider myself a noob.

    Developing power/endurance advice needed

I did some mountains for the first time this summer (Cat 4 and 3 according to MMR) and noticed I could keep up with my riding partner for a while but eventually my ability to push a gear big enough to keep up with him resulted in significant HR elevation and lots of lactic acid and I would drop...

    Bamboo bikes

Just heard a story on the beeb about bikes being made of African bamboo and sent off to the US. Sounds very cool and was wondering if anyone knew who the distributor was so I could get a closer look.

so many sweet choices how do I decide

I'm looking into purchasing my first road bike after having a MTB for several years. I've started doing 40+ road rides with climbing to get some climbing legs and distance training and doing the road ride on my MTB is getting a little under my skin. I've done some road in the past but...

cycling shorts advice wanted - more or less spandex better?

I cannot bring myself to buy Assos after a scathingingly hilarious "open letter" posted by a blogging friend of mine. I just see the name a start laughing. I have no idea if they are any good or not but the damage had been done :D. Also, I have also been looking at Nalini so it's good to know...

cycling shorts advice wanted - more or less spandex better?

This is very useful info. Thanks. I'm wearing just your basic Sugoi short and I find them quite comfy but then again my longest ride ever was yesterday @ 30.2 miles so I'm exactly hardcore....yet :D. I'm training for a single 40, topping 200 for the month and adding climbing to my...

    Bike pedals and clips advice

I'm not an experienced rider but I have done some reasarch and I decided to go with SPDs. clipless pedals are systems that link your foot to the bike so whether you go with SPDs, eggbeaters or froggers it will not matter what system you use as long as you match. You need SPD clips for SPD...

cycling shorts advice wanted - more or less spandex better?

I've been looking at a number of cycling shorts (who knew there would be sooo many to choose from). One thing I've noticed is than many shorts use "muscle support" as a important feature. In looking at the fabrics I've noticed these tend to differ in the amount of spandex (10-18%). So, which...
