    A Quick Question...

Either they were never tapped to begin with or there's paint in there making it look smooth.

    7Speed freehub to 9speed

I don't know anything about the HED wheel but I think you are out of luck. Even if the HED wheel uses a Shimano cassette, moving to a 8/9 speed cassette means you will have to redish the wheel. If I'm not mistaken, the HED wheel cannot be redished so the rim would be off-center. On a Shimano...

Was this the right frame size??

A 50 cm frame is on the small size and toe overlap would be almost expected.

    Does Anyone Know About Brakes?

Cantilevers can be adjusted to have almost as much power as decent V-brakes but, from what I hear, V-brakes don't modulate well. They have a lot of power, which makes them difficult to modulate. My last mountain bike had the cantilevers adjusted so that they stopped really well. Better pads...

My new used wheels: how good are they?

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll just ride them until they break then rebuild them.

My new used wheels: how good are they?

I bought a set of wheels from a co-worker who had them sitting in his garage for the past 10 years. They are Matrix ISO-C II rims laced with DT double-butted spokes onto a set of Campagnolo Record 36 hole hubs. I know that Campy Record hubs are a standard by which other hubs are compared to...

    Replacing Avid Disc Brake Calipers

I haven't really looked at the mechanical brakes because I already have them on my bike (Avid BB7) but the times I have looked the BB7 cost the same as BB5 so why not upgrade?

    Shifter development

Nope, I never shifted it while stopped (as far as I can remember). I just remember that it snapped it one day and the cost of the replacement cable was more than I could afford at the time.

    Cyclocomputer HELP

Did it ever work correctly to begin with? Do you still have the instructions that came with your computer? You can measure the distance that your tire covers with one complete rotation and use this to ensure that the speed and distance measurements are accurate. Where the magnet and sensor...

    Shifter development

I rode a bike with Positron back in the day. When the cable broke it became a single-speed. What was nice was that I could shift gears while stationary by simply pushing the lower pivot in or out until it clicked into the next gear.

    Equipment Geeks

I will tell you that my long-term experience with people like this is that they are the ones who stop being a cyclist long before everyone else. The novelty of having an expensive bike wears off after a while and they realize that they've been fooling themselves so they quit. Keep tabs on this...

I want to get a debate going!!!!

My co-worker was telling me about a cool bike store near his house and he was so jazzed about the place I almost made a trip there to check it out (about 60 miles each way!). Why? He bought a bike online, cracked the carbon steerer tube, brought it in to this store because they are a local...

    Equipment Geeks

Tell it to him like it is: you might have a $6000 top-of-the-line everything bike but if the engine (your legs, lungs, and will) is not up to the task then you will be at the back of the pack no matter how much money you throw at the bike. Get out and ride!

Follow up to that "Latest research on saddles" thread...

I bought one of those for my nephew's bike. I had a chance to ride it down the block and try it out but that was too short of a ride to really tell anything. It was on sale at Performance.

I want to get a debate going!!!!

Repeat after me, boys and girls, "NO SALES PRESSURE!" That wasn't so hard, was it? I hate when I walk into a bike store and the sales guy sees $$$$$$. If I'm going to spend my money in your store I will do so, no salesman needed. If you want to chase me out the door without spending a dime...

    seawater

Rinse it down with a lot of fresh water. Don't think about it, just do it. Not bike related but my brother ran his RC monster truck into some brackish water (about 50/50 sea/fresh water) and his exposed metal parts all started to rust almost right away.

    Upgrade Compatibility

The real question is whether or not your shifters are indexed. If they click when you shift the rear derailleur then they are indexed and they work as a system (shifter, rear derailleur, cassette are all designed to work together). If they are friction shifters then you can pretty much do...
