Managing heat while biking and racing.

Some key helpful points (I added a few minor elements and improved points... I hope) 1. allow yourself some exposure to exercising in the heat (with common sense limitations) and allow time (see post for specifics) for adaptive response to occur (primarily plasma volume increases) 2. Hydrate...

The Ultimate Interval, what, when, who, why....

Hello everyone. I've written an article titled High Intensity Interval Training, for cyclists who are interested in increasing their fitness levels. My goal was to provide science-based information (as opposed to subjective, opinion, and/or anecdotal), and I include the citations for the...

    cadence

I read through the cadence thread and thought it might be helpful to throw some science on topic. I read through over a dozen research papers on the ideal cadence and produced an article on the topic entitled: "The Ideal Cadence for Competitive Bicycling". and cited over 8. A few bullet...

Managing heat while biking and racing.

Maydog, yeah, with high temperatures it's very hard to consume as much as you lose through perspiration and in some cases it may not be possible (and electrolytes can be an issue). High humidity makes the problem even worse. My best advice would be to try to pre-cool just before starting...

    survival tactics for road cycling

Davereo: You are 100% correct: "Never ride against traffic". That statement was so obvious to me that I failed to add it to my list. Thanks! Chillin': Your items 1, 2, and 4 are 100% correct. Item 3 of riding on the sidewalks is generally a no go. In fact, many cities have ordinances...

    Myth concerning Crank Arm Lengths

The lower cadences can definitely stress the knee, especially if not properly adapted. I think it's ideal to have a range of cadences when riding, sprinting high, burst of speed high, hill climbing and time-trialing lower. Generally we do this naturally without much thought. It's nice to have...

    Myth concerning Crank Arm Lengths

Dr. James C. Martin, PhD research shows that there is little difference in efficiencies between your current crank arm length and any other commercially available crank arm length. There are several other interesting finds from his research. In summary: Common crank sizes are nearly all...

Thanks for replying. I never considered male vs female riding styles and the effects on injury and death as a result.

    'Bent suitable for arm injury?

Masters Racing is only a small element of the biking world. And of course we all are allowed to love and hate whatever we choose. (An extreme illustration of this is Jesus Christ himself. Loved by many, but murdered by haters.) I personally try to lean more to love for others or at least...

    survival tactics for road cycling

I just saw some local news of a bicyclist who was struck by a car and killed. The details were not given, so I don't know the exact cause. At anyrate, I've compiled a list of survival tactics for road riding that may save someone some skin or a trip to an Emergency Room...

    'Bent suitable for arm injury?

There is a write up in the following link that discusses an act of great sportsmanship that is extremely rare (in all sports) and is worth knowing about. It's the complete OPPOSITE of doping (which is all one seems to hear about cycling these days)...
