I just got a Trek 4300 for $350, just over your price range. Trek makes really nice bikes and I love mine. Great for beginners like you and me.
Yeah take them both for a spin in the parking lot or around the block. That way you know for sure which bike fits you best.

I had a Giant mountain bike a few years back. Great bike, but I outgrew it pretty fast and now I have a Trek. Gotta love Giant though.
Thanks Duckwah. I probably won't be getting the disc version of the 4300 though, can't really afford that much.
