    Gitane Grand Sport Deluxe

Hello all, was doing some dumpster diving recently and came up with a Gitane Grand Sport Deluxe from the mid 70s I would guess. Everything is in fairly decent shape except that I suspect the BB / Crank is shot. Any opinions on whether spend some $ on it? I'm looking for a back up bike to stash...

    Gearing 101

Relative newbie here. Could someone give me a simple tutorial on comparing gearing on different bikes? Background is that I have a Jamis Quest with a 30/42/52 triple crank and a 12-23 cassette. I'm going to be doing some light weight touring in a fairly hilly area and have been thinking about a...

    Convert Jamis Quest to Touring

Thanks John. I'm a big boy (200 lbs) and like my comforts. I did 8 days in Spain (Pyreness to Santiago) on a 35 lb converted trail bike a couple of years ago and definitely could have used a little less weight (both me and the bike). Hence the road bike.

    Convert Jamis Quest to Tourer

I have a Jamis Quest that I'd like to convert to do some light "credit card" touring. I'm thinking all I need to do is slap on a rack and maybe get some bigger tires. Would anyone recommend anything else? How big do you think I can go with tires? Would existing wheels accomodate a wider tire? As...

    St. Paddy's Day..

Speaking of all things porcine, there is a phrase in Irish "ar muin na mhuice" which literally means on the pigs back and roughly means leading an easy/good life i.e. life of Riley. I've heard it derives from the fact that the meat off a pig's back is the choicest cut but I have no idea.

    Baltimore area LBS

Wondering if anyone has a recommendation in the Baltimore, USA area where I can get a professional fitting. The shop where I got the bike doesn't have that service. I have at least a half inch differential in leg length and am looking for some expert help on pedals and a proper fitting. Thanks.

    $1200 decision

I just picked up a 2004 Jamis Quest for $1200. Early days yet but so far so good. The whole steel v. alum thing got kind of confusing for a newbie but since I considered ride comfort an important factor felt I couldn't go too wrong with steel. The components on the Quest (mostly Ultegra) seemed...

    Tolouse Lautrec

I'm a newbie looking for my first true road bike (been riding a trail bike with slicks the last couple of years). I'm about 5"11" but only have about a 30" inseam. From comments I've seen the geometry of the LeMond Tourmalet would seem a good choice for someone with my dimensions. Unfortunatley...
