'05 Log ?

any day's a great day to "start-a-new", however i suppose i can get a little
wrapped up with the symbolic nature of new year's day being the best day to
employ a new regiment.

mine? a runner's log! hoo-ray for me! (now let's see how long it last).
anyone know of some good free runner's logs out the on-line? i don't mind
trading an email address (registering) for a good runner's log that i can
manage on-line. anyone out there using one? which are the better ones? i
would love to start 2005 off right with a log. what better day to start a
log than on saturday?

i'm also considering going out today and buying a HRM....with the intention of
course of employing it in a training regiment. more data for the log too. i
suppose. what are you guys and gals charting w/your log?...distance, temps?
shoes and milage on a specific pair? type of run? (hill training, etc.)?

happy new year to all...be safe and healty for 2005....

I just use a spreadsheet (Excel or Works Spreadsheet) That way, you
don't have to use somebody else's form and squeeze into it things that
there really isn't room for.

I normally just track milage and course, then maybe weather. But when
I am actively training for racing (say, February through October) I
often include heart rate info and how I felt, if I think it is
relevant.

I have a rather wide column for "Remarks" which allows me to include
just about anything I think might be important.

If you are like me, the log will be a tool to keep you going. It is
fun and rewarding to write down the mileage, and to see the total
yearly mileage increase. I don't like writing "DNR" any more than
necessary.

Good luck.

If you're getting an HRM, take a look at the Polars that come with the
"Polar Precision Performance" software. That would be the S810i, S625X,
S610i, and the S410. I really like this application. You can customize it
for all the data you want to track. Pluse the 2-way infrared capabilities
of all of these (except the s410) make it very easy to download all your
running data as well us upload your settings and workouts.

I have OCrD (obsessive compulsive running disorder), so I've got more data
than most. At any rate, this is *some* of what I track:

Date, Type of run, mileage, time, minutes per mile, miles per hour, heart
rate average, heart rate max, temp ºF, temp real-feel, humidity, wind, sky
(cloudy, sunny, etc), shoes worn, body weight, apparel.

If you can wait a couple of hours, you can have a copy of my spreadsheet (the
2005 version of the one I'm used in 04). It logs milage across different pairs
of shoes, as well as tracking weekly/monthly / annual milage. I have a chart
of weekly milage.

The most impressive piece of crazy tracking I saw was the guy who had a
database backend connected to a webserver (I think it was Wakem)

Lance, baby, that would be a training 'regime'. A 'regiment' is a military
formation formed of (usually) two battalions. OTOH, perhaps you *are*
training a regiment? If so, you'll need quite a few hrm's and a very large
training log...

I downloaded the thinnman one, and that gave me some good ideas. So I did
a similar one for myself, with the shoe logging functions, then added some
things I wanted like monthly milage, and a chart that displays weekly milage.

I've got a 2005 version if anyone's interested, though I suspect most of the
posters here are capable of writing their own one that's at least as good.

Thinnmann 2005 is here: http://thinnmann.com/runlog.htm

I also found and fixed several of those bugs in the 2004 version.

I'm trying logrun.xls this year. It's created by David S. Hays, O.D. of Vision Care Associates. I don't have a URL for
it but it looks good so far. His email is: [email protected]

I'd like to see it. I've never been much for Excel programming myself.....

Although it doesn't allow me to do some things easily that I wanted to
do, I've also found I like their log software software. I just use it in
conjunction with my main db to display time in training zones
(rolling 7, 14, 28 days; with/without the stuff below recovery effort
(eliminates some junk in there).

and food, fluid (during, recovery), predominant surface
(dirt/gravel/road, single track), surface condition (various flavors of
snow, slush, ice, mud, etc - this might be in your "other", Phil ;)),
elevation gain, aches/pains, route and comments, plus others that are
useful for me, but no one else.

If you have Excel than you can try the log this guy created:

http://www.davidhays.net/running/runlog/runlog.html

Click on "Download"

It uses macros so you will be asked to enable them (possible risk of
viruses etc). I did this earlier in 2004 and had no problems so I doubt
you need to worry about it.

Hey, I'm doing that, too. (Using MySQL + PHP + Apache for the geeks among
us) Partly for fun, and 'cause it will do just what I want. I'm also
tracking elevation gain/loss, in addition to other stuff. I'd just been
keeping a text blob heretofore.

I'm writing it now, inspired by the www.coolrunning.com online running log,
which isn't half bad.

IIRC, that's what he was using (well at least MySQL/Apache. Don't know what
language, might have been perl)

For the group, the Serpentine Running Club (UK) has a nice spread sheet log
that I have used over the years. You can check them out at:

Donovans looks good though, thanks for the post\

As member of Vision Care maybe he has at least proofread the functions.
:)

I see the URL and will look but since you have used both how do the
compare?
