1/8" chain and Shimano SIS rear derailleur

Can it work? I'm using a 44t BMX chainwheel that takes a 1/8" chain, and
want to use a 7spd freewheel rear wheel with an old school Shimano SIS 7spd
rear derailleur on an old MTB frame. 1/8" chain works fine on the 7spd
freewheel. TIA.

It can. If you find, that the chain rubs against the plates, put thin
washers under the pulley bolts.
